Since the 1960s, FAO has taken the lead in the fight against hunger in Somalia, supporting the Government and rural communities in times of crisis as well as in pursuit agricultural development goals. Special attention is devoted to helping rural communities withstand recurrent shocks, such as drought, flooding, and plant and animal pests and diseases. Through resilience programming, FAO balances technical support with the provision of quality inputs to prevent or lessen the impact of shocks to livelihoods and keep development gains intact.

This document assembles three reviews of the marine shrimp and groundfish fisheries of the Brazil-Guianas shelf (northern Brazil, French Guiana, Guyana, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago and eastern Venezuela) and one on environmental aspects of the area. The resources reviews are based on technical reports prepared prior to and during the Workshop in Cumaná, Venezuela and during previous meetings of the stock assessment experts of the WECAFC Ad Hoc Working Group on Shrimp and Groundfish Resources in the Brazil-Guianas Shelf.

Tokelau joined the Organization as an Associate Member in 2011. Over the past few years, FAO assistance to the Pacific Island Territory has contributed to the sustainable management of natural resources and food security. In the Sahel, around 65 percent of the active population works in the agriculture sector and their livelihoods are therefore affected by climate change, markets and environmental factors. More than half of these are women. Recurring crises pose real concerns for the achievement of sustainable food and nutrition security in the region. The root causes of vulnerability to food insecurity and malnutrition are complex and multidimensional.
