This report presents the key findings on forest land use and land-use change between 1990 and 2005 from FAO’s 2010 Global Forest Resources Assessment Remote Sensing Survey. It is the first report of its kind to present systematic estimates of global forest land use and change. The ambitious goal of the Remote Sensing Survey was to use remote sensing data to obtain globally consistent estimates of forest area and changes in tree cover and forest land use between 1990 and 2005.

This tenth edition of State of the World's Forests elaborates on a fundamental truth: forests, forestry and forest products play a critical role in sustainable development. State of the World's Forests is published every two years. Throughout history, deforestation has accompanied economic development. It was primarily in response to deforestation that the concept of sustainable development originated and evolved within forest science.

Таджикистан сотрудничает с ФАО со времени вступления страны в Организацию в 1995 году. Первоначально помощь ФАО заключалась в реализации краткосрочных чрезвычайных мер реагирования в связи со вспышками саранчи, а также в оказании поддержки стране в период ее перехода к мирной жизни после гражданской войны. Впоследствии акцент сотрудничества сместился на проведение мероприятий по восстановлению и развитию в целях создания устойчивого сельскохозяйственного сектора и обеспечения продовольственной и пищевой безопасности.

This issue of Unasylva contains, as promised in the previous edition, additional articles on sustainable mountain development. These articles help to complete the focus on the topic and should also help to promote interest in the recently declared International Year of the Mountain (2000) for which FAO has been designated lead agency status within the United Nations system.

To anyone who is genuinely concerned for the future of both the world's forests and the populations who depend either directly or indirectly - on the use of these forests for their livelihood, it should be apparent that, rather than being a force for the destruction of forest resources, forest industry is and must continue to be an essential element in the process of valorizing these resources and thereby ensuring the socio-economic base for sustainable development.
