Rural and livelihood studies, alongside development organisations, are stressing the importance of gender awareness in debates over food security, food crises and land tenure. Yet, within the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, these gender dynamics are frequently disregarded. In Vietnam, rice is intimately linked to the country’s food security. Over the last decade, rice export levels, production methods, and local and global market prices have remained constant preoccupations for governmental and development agencies.

The renovation process in Vietnam in the past decade has enabled significant economic growth as well as and greater rights and more important economic roles of farming households. However, much of this reform has focussed on men as head of households, meaning men have benefited more from economic reform, both economically and in terms of their power within the household. Inequalities continue in access to and control of key resources such as land, water, credit and rest time, as well as in access to public services.

Why is it important to incorporate gender into the agriculture-related work of the World Bank and borrower countries, and how can this be achieved' Women are integral to farming systems, yet their productivity remains low compared to their potential. Gender-neutral programming which does not take into account the differences in the needs and constraints of men and women farmers can bypass and even be detrimental to women.

The research provides a holistic overview of the key changes that affected Northern Chin society from pre-colonial times up to now in villages close to Hakha town where State penetration was stronger than in more remote

areas. The study sheds light on the overlapping and evolving statutory and customary land systems and on the issues faced by contemporary Chin communities as they seek to govern land and natural resources.

A lot of aspects are commonly subsumed under the concept land reform. These range from redistribution to tenure and agrarian reform. What do these different concepts mean? Agrarian reform: this is the broadest term and refers to attempts to change the agrarian structure of a country. It typically includes land reform, tenure, the reform of agricultural support systems and the reform of the credit system.

Small-scale farmers in north-central Namibia face numerous challenges, ranging from low crop yields, high rainfall variability and land degradation which is threatening the long-term productivity of the land, to social changes that are reducing the work force available for farming. This paper aims to assess existing land use practices (LUPs) and to determine their relationship to ecosystem services (ES). As agriculture (crop and livestock farming) is the dominant land use in northern Namibia, it is the main driver influencing environmental services and will be in the focus here. We suggest

Communal land is one of the land tenure systems in Namibia, the other being freehold land tenure system. At independence in 1990,Namibia resolved to retain communal land on the basis that majority of the population derived their livelihoods from communal land.Notwithstanding the increasing urban population in the country since independence, the majority of the Namibian population still lives in the communal areas, and many of the urban-based population continue to have close relations in rural areas.

In the context of Knowledge for Climate programme, an expert pool was requested from Theme 6 (high quality climate projections) to provide data and information to study the future impacts of climate change on the agricultural land-use patterns in the Netherlands. More specifically, a number of questions were posed in regard to: 1) representing and explaining the spatial distribution of different types of farming; and 2) simulating with Land Use Scanner the future developments of agricultural land-use while taking into account effects of climate change and changes in (agricultural) policy.

In het gebied Emst-zuid, gelegen op de oostelijke Veluwerand, zijn allerlei ruimtelijke ontwikkelingen gaande op het gebied van natuur- en landschapsontwikkeling (realisatie EHS-Wisselse Poort), uitbreiding recreatieve voorzieningen, landbouw en kavelruil, beheer historische beken, ontwikkelen aantrekkelijk woongebied voor bewoners, herinrichting van het watersysteem e.a. Voor Gelders Landschap zijn hier in het verleden veel voormalige landbouwgronden verworven voor natuurontwikkeling. Geldersch Landschap heeft hier ook de regierol voor de gebiedsontwikkeling.

Het aantal landbouwbedrijven dat in het gebied van plan PARK21 toekomstmogelijkheden heeft zal veel lager zijn dan het huidige aantal bedrijven. De terugloop wordt sterk bepaald door de mate waarin kansen voor multifunctionele landbouwactiviteiten worden opgepakt. Op basis van het onderzoek, waarbij de inbreng van de betrokkenen een belang-rijke rol gespeeld heeft, zijn een tweetal scenario’s opgesteld als uitersten voor de toekomst van de landbouwbedrijven in het gebied.

In de provincie Limburg is er steeds meer discussie tussen overheden, de landbouwsector en maatschappelijke organisaties over de inrichting van het landelijk gebied in relatie tot de landbouwproductieruimte en andere maatschappelijke gewenste opgaven (groene, blauwe, maar ook rode opgaven). De provincie Limburg wilde graag door uitvoering van een strategisch onderzoek inzicht en ondersteuning in de vraag welke maatregelen en instrumenten ontbreken c.q.
