Los principales defensores del aprovechamiento del bosque admiten la necesidad de tomar en consideracin la conservacin. Incluso los ms acendrados grupos ecologistas reconocen que los programas de conservacin encaminados a preservar los bosques deben incluir algunas actividades de aprovechamiento. La cuestin que hay que dilucidar es si se deben conservar los bosques y qu grado de utilizacin se ha de aceptar, o si, partiendo del supuesto de que se necesita utilizar los bosques y hacerlo de manera sostenible, qu grado de conservacin se ha de garantizar.

With the purpose of bringing new ideas to bear on the subject of institutional support to forest policy implementation, a Consultation sponsored by FAO and the Swedish International Development Authority (SIDA) was held at FAO Headquarters in Rome from 2 to 11 February 1983. Twenty-nine participants attended In their individual capacities, drawn from 24 countries of Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America and North America and from a very wide spectrum of disciplines. This issue of Unasylva presents a selection of the papers discussed at the Consultation.

A tree is more than timber. It is food, income, medicine, fuel/energy, fodder. Forestry plays an important role in providing food security and poverty alleviation.

In response to government concerns, FAO has begun to develop more information on the nature of small forest enterprises, their contributions to rural incomes, the constraints that hold the small entrepreneur back, and the opportunities that strengthening this sector hold for improved rural incomes. An initial step was the commissioning of a number of case-studies.
