The concept of adaptive social protection has evolved over the past two decades, and examples of practice point to significant potential for accelerating the interconnection between social protection mechanisms and climate-smart practices and adaption. However, there is a lack of evidence on how actual practices can and should change, and on resilience outcomes.

Guatemala is characterized by high rates of poverty and inequality, as well as a significant incidence of violent acts and generalized social tension. Climate change impacts on temperatures, rainfall patterns and extreme weather events are deepening the challenges of marginalized populations regarding food security, livelihood options, housing needs and access/availability of natural resources.

This study conducted a participatory appraisal of climate vulnerabilities and conflict risks three communities across Guatemala: 1) Maya Chʼortiʼ Indigenous Peoples farmers in La Lima village, Camotán, Chiquimula department; 2) Farmers, ranchers and sand harvesters in Tenedores village, Morales, Izabal department; and 3) Farmers in El Carpintero village, Chiantla, Huehuetenango department. The impacts of climate variability in Guatemala are leading to the depletion of natural resources and the destabilization of established weather patterns, which are critical for many livelihoods.

In fragile and conflict-affected settings and host communities, hunger, severe malnutrition, and water insecurity are on the rise, directly impacting the resilience of food, land and water systems. The interplay of these issues often gives rise to conflict and forced migration, with women and other marginalized groups disproportionately affected due to their limited access to channels of power and influence during shocks and crises.

Horsegram (Macrotyloma uniflorum [Lam.] Verdc.) is an underutilized pulse crop primarily cultivated in South Asian countries like India, Nepal, and Sri Lanka. It offers various nutraceutical properties and demonstrates remarkable resilience to both biotic and abiotic stresses. As a result, it has emerged as a promising crop for ensuring future food and nutritional security. The purpose of this study was to assess the nutritional profile of 139 horsegram germplasm lines obtained from 16 Indian states that were conserved at the National Gene Bank of India.

Enhancing Resilience and Advancing Climate Mitigation through a Community-Based Breeding Approach

Based on extensive grower data from PepsiCo, we built climate-yield models specifically for it and came up with results about climate risks and opportunities for its potato production. The results were then translated into actionable insights to incorporate into its sustainability roadmaps. PepsiCo used the Climate Resilience Platform, an online website developed from this project, to identify future climate risks and to better prioritize adaptation practices, thereby increasing its supply chain resilience across 10 countries of its potato program.
