Women Empowerment in Water Governance in Polder Zone in Bangladesh

December, 2022
Bangladesh

The polders in coastal zones of Bangladesh are vulnerable to climate risks resulting in low agricultural productivity and low incomes for the communities dependent on agriculture-based livelihoods in these regions. Bangladesh adopted a participatory approach to water governance in the 1980s to improve the equitable and sustainable use of water resources. With men migrating away for better income opportunities, women are more involved in agricultural production and dependent on water resources.

Factors influencing the implementation of agroecological practices: lessons drawn from the Aba-Garima watershed, Ethiopia

December, 2021
Ethiopia

The challenges to agroecological transitions are not the same for all farmers and implementation of agroecological practices in different locations could yield different results. With this consideration, this study was conducted in Aba-Garima watershed in northwestern Ethiopia to characterize the structure and activities of farming households and assess factors influencing the implementation and sustainability of agroecological practices. Data were collected from 218 households, 16 key informants, and 12 focus group discussions.

Urban stakeholder analysis for food waste prevention and reduction in Sri Lanka

December, 2022
Sri Lanka

Mapping stakeholders and their potential roles for prevention and reduction of food waste (FW) supports a coherent, coordinated and complementary approach to quantification, causes identification and scaling up of feasible solutions for significant returns on investment. State and nonstate stakeholders were mapped in selected municipalities: Colombo metropolitan area (Colombo, Sri Jayewardenepura-Kotte, Negombo, Kaduwela and Moratuwa municipal council areas), Jaffna, Kandy, Batticoloa, Kurunegala and Galle.

Proceedings of the multi-actor and multi-disciplinary trainings and consultations on food waste prevention and reduction in Sri Lanka

December, 2022
Sri Lanka

Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 12.3 of the UN 2030 Agenda calls for halving per capita global food waste (FW) from retail to households. Food waste (FW) prevention and reduction play a major role in ensuring the sustainability of food systems as well as effective Solid Waste Management (SWM). A coherent, coordinated, and complementary approach to quantification causes identification, and scaling up feasible solutions is necessary.

High-yielding Climate-resilient beans improve food security and kick-start business in Zimbabwe

December, 2019
Zimbabwe

Agriculture used to be at the center of
Zimbabwe’s economy, accounting for about
20% of GDP. But it has since declined to
about 10%, since the introduction of the
land reform bill. The government has been
intensifying efforts to prioritize the sector
until 2020. The mostly rural population
depend on agriculture, which provides
60-70% of the population with income.
Yet smallholder farmers face significant
challenges. Low and erratic rainfall,
drought, low and declining soil fertility

FR2.3: What influences women's participation in water governance? Preliminary findings from Bangladesh

December, 2021
Bangladesh

The Bangladesh polder zones cover 1.2 million hectares of agricultural land and are home to around eight million people with women playing a critical role in agriculture and food systems. With limited access to and control over productive resources and incomes, women are disproportionately vulnerable to climatic risks. Their ability to make important decisions can have positive outcomes on the governance of natural resources, agricultural productivity, and livelihoods.

How beans are beating hunger in Burundi

December, 2019
Burundi

Burundi’s population has been expanding
far faster than its economy. And while the
agriculture sector contributes around 40%
of GDP and to over 95% of food supplies,
high pressure on land is leading to soil
fertility depletion, eroding the country’s
capacity to ramp up food production for a
growing population.
The Flagship project: “Improving food
security, nutrition, incomes, natural
resource base and gender equity for better
livelihoods of smallholder households in
sub-Saharan Africa” between 2015 and

Village Midline Study: Rupandehi, Nepal

December, 2019
Nepal

This report presents the findings from the village midline study conducted in Madhuri Village, the CCAFS benchmark site of Rupandehi district, Nepal between the 26th and the 30th of May 2019 . This document reports on the various changes which have occurred since the baseline was conducted in the same village. Changes in agricultural practices, sources of information, organizational and institutional development, climate change adaptation practices, and networks present in the community are assessed.

Co-designing and scaling sustainable intensification of mixed farming systems in Laos

December, 2022
Germany

For over a decade, rural Lao households have been undergoing a transformation from subsistence-oriented production systems to agricultural commercialization, facilitated by a series of Lao government policies opening the economy to international markets coupled with improved connectivity. The extent and depth of this process is accelerating, particularly in upland (non-paddy) farming systems that were formerly part of a swidden landscape.

Preparing for, coping with and bouncing back after shocks. A nuanced resilience assessment for smallholder farms and farmers in Northern Ghana

December, 2022
Bahrain

Smallholder farmers in Northern Ghana regularly face shocks, challenging the
sustainability of their farms and livelihoods. Different farm households and household
members may be differently affected and respond with different coping strategies. We
combined whole-farm modelling and farmer consultations to investigate the
vulnerability, buffer and adaptive capacity of three farm types in Northern Ghana
towards severe climate, economic and social shocks. We further assessed intrahousehold

Smallholder farmers' willingness to pay for two-wheel tractor-based mechanisation services in Zambia and Zimbabwe

December, 2022

Mechanisation is back among top development policy priorities for transforming African smallholder agriculture. Yet previous and ongoing efforts ubiquitously suffer from lack of scientific information on end-user effective demand for different types of mechanical innovations to inform public investment or business development programmes. We assess smallholder farmers' willingness to pay (WTP) for two-wheel tractor (2WT)-based ripping, direct seeding and transportation using a random sample of 2800 smallholder households in Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Human adaptation to climate change in the context of forests: a systematic review

December, 2023
Global

We assessed how people adapt to climate change in the context of forests through a systematic review of the international empirical research literature. We found that drought, precipitation variability, extreme precipitation and flooding, and extreme heat were the climatic stressors to which responses were most frequently documented. Individuals and households received the most research attention, followed by national government, civil society, and local government. Europe and North America were the geographic foci of more research than other regions.
