Critical shifts are affecting rural resource rights in Africa through widespread reform in land, forestry and other laws. The cutting edge of transformation affecting women is in emerging new provision for wives to hold family property as co-owners with their husbands, which could play a main role in revitalising smallholder agriculture. Recognition that equity in domestic land relations may ultimately be a prerequisite to the modernisation of subsistence agriculture in agrarian economies is the thesis underlying the analysis of legal texts in this paper.

It is now widely accepted that AIDS in not just a health issue. In the recently developed Poverty Reduction Strategy Paper, the Malawi people and government designated HIV/AIDS as a crosscutting issue, and the Malawi National HIV/AIDS Strategic Framework 2000-2004 calls for “an expanded, multi-sectoral national response to the epidemic.” However the capacity to respond to these calls lags behind. In many sectors, policy making still proceeds as if HIV/AIDS never happened.

Utilises a number of situations observed in tropical Asia to motivate a simple trade-theoretical analysis of the implications of technological progress in agriculture.

Does poverty in Egypt have a woman's face? Is female poverty linked to their conditions in the labour market or levels of education? Are women particularly at risk in poor households? This report addresses the gender dimensions of poverty using the recent Household Expenditure, Income and Consumption Survey of 1999/2000 for Egypt. Poverty measures of males and females were found to be significantly different, in both urban and rural areas, where higher levels are observed among females than males.

In het gebied rond de Loonse en Drunense Duinen bij Tilburg wil een aantal partijen een grondbank opzetten. Aanleiding hiervoor is dat verschillende grondeigenaren grond in tijdelijk gebruik willen geven bij de agrariërs in de omgeving. Overlegplatform Duinboeren is een plaatselijke organisatie van de boeren die actief is op het gebied van plattelandsvernieuwing door boeren. Dit overlegplatform speelt bij de grondbank een belangrijke rol. Het bepaalt aan de hand van criteria welke boeren het meest inaanmerking komen voor het gebruik van de grond. Hiermee adviseert het de grondeigenaren.

Dit rapport beschrijft vier trendbreuken in de grondgebonden landbouw die zich in de komende decennia kunnen voordoen. In de eerste twee trendbreuken blijft Nederland georiënteerd op de wereldmarkt. In het eerste geval via een verregaande specialisatie op zuivel, in het tweede via een verregaande rationalisering van het productieproces leidend tot het verdwijnen van het gezinsbedrijf met eigen grond. In de twee laatste trendbreuken is de oriëntatie minder internationaal.

The .Systems Research Network for Ecoregional Land Use Planning in Support of Natural Resource Management in Tropical Asia (SysNet). was financed under the Ecoregional Fund, administered by the International Service for National Agricultural Research (ISNAR). The objective of the project was to develop and evaluate methodologies and tools for land use analysis, and apply them at the subnational scale to support agricultural and environmental policy formulation. In the framework of this project, the land use planning and analysis system LUPAS was developed.

Voor de Commissie Waterbeheer 21ste eeuw zijn drie scenario's voor de grondgebruiksvormen land- en tuinbouw en natuur in Nederland opgesteld. Als basis voor de meest waarschijnlijke ontwikkeling is daarbij het Europesecoördinatiescenario van het Centraal Planbureau gebruikt. Dit is uitgewerkt naar de eisen die deze vormen van grondgebruik aan het watersysteem in de komende decennia zullen stellen.

In 1997 is het rapport van het Staring Centrum 'Meten van Maatwerk: monitoring van het WCL-beleid 1994-1996' uitgebracht. De conclusie uit dit rapport was dat er nogal wat verschillen zijn tussen WCL-gebieden als er gekeken wordt naar sturing en het aantal projecten dat is gestart. Door gebruik te maken van kennis over marketing en samenwerking zou de sturing en integraliteit van de reeds lopende initiatieven uitgebreid kunnen worden. Het onderzoek richt zich op het pilotgebied 'de Meierij' en de daarbij betrokken actoren.
