This study of 23 leases over land on the island of Epi is the first of the Jastis Blong Evriwan (JBE) research activities to examine land and natural resource management (L&NRM) and access to justice on particular Vanuatu islands. The research will be repeated on the island of Tanna. To inform the broader context of land leasing in Vanuatu, JBE, in collaboration with the government of Vanuatu, has begun collecting and analyzing government land-leasing data.

Large-scale land acquisitions can have lasting repercussions for the future of agriculture, including both agribusiness and family farming. Rather than rushing into land deals, governments and investors should properly consider the wider range of options to invest in agriculture. In many parts of the world, family farmers have proved efficient and dynamic. Working with them can generate healthy returns, avoid the risks associated with land acquisitions, and improve farmers’ livelihoods.

This report is the final product of a country case study prepared in the framework of the comparative analysis of organization and performance of cotton sectors in Sub-Saharan Africa, a study published by the World Bank in 2008.

This study was commissioned to provide an understanding of the complex impacts climate change will likely have on existing gender and social inequalities.

Cet atelier s'est consacré aux problèmes de la sécurité alimentaire et du développement agricole dans les États africains fragiles.

L'élevage représente environ 35 pour cent du produit intérieur brut agricole des pays d'Afrique subsaharienne. La croissance attendue de la consommation de produits d'origine animale offre de bonnes chances d'améliorer les revenus et les moyens de subsistance des ménages pauvres tributaires de l'élevage. Les éleveurs pauvres doivent en même temps faire face à de nombreux défis.

L'arbre de karité pousse à l'état sauvage dans de vastes parties de l'Afrique de l'Ouest. Cet arbre aux exigences modestes se contente de peu d'eau et protège le sol contre l'érosion. Depuis toujours les femmes utilisent les amandes oléagineuses pour fabriquer de l'huile et du beurre utilisés pour la cuisson et à des fins cosmétiques. Elles vendent également les produits tirés de la noix de karité sur les marchés locaux.

Coffee is an ecologically and economically significant crop for Haiti. It is not only the main source of income for more than 100,000 farmers, but the coffee ecosystem also sustains a large part of the remaining tree cover (currently at less than 1.5 percent of land) of the country. This report does not aim to detail the structural constraints impacting upon the Haitian coffee sub-sector.

Includes ’small-holder’ farmers as potential beneficiaries of agrarian reform in South Africa, a class-analytic approach to small-scale farming, accumulation ’from above’ and ’from below’, policy implications.
