Farmer participatory research in cassava soil management and varietal dissemination in Vietnam

Farmer Participatory Research (FPR) in Vietnam has been carried out since 1994 in collaboration with CIAT, with the objective of improving the adoption of soil conservation practices in cassava fields. Two villages in Pho Yen district, Bac Thai province; one in Thanh Hoa district, Vinh Phu province; and one in Luong Son district of Hoa Binh province were selected as pilot sites for implementing the FPR methodology.

In Kenya and the sub-Saharan Africa generally, there have been little systematic discussions
on the post-colonial struggles over control and ownership of land. Studies ignore that the "land
question" is not about production alone and consequently have failed to assess its wider
consequences on the society. This raises the question, "what is the current socio-political
dimension to the land question and what is the consequence of their interplay with other
changes underway in the country?"

In order to make ends meet, many poor urban households in sub-Saharan Africa fall back on farming activities, either within the city boundaries or in the rural areas from which they come. The central question raised in this article is whether access to farmland influences a household's food situation. The findings come from a study on urban agriculture in Korogocho, one of two slum areas in Nairobi, Kenya, where a survey was conducted in 1994.

Fao Expert Consultation on Policies for Animal Production and Natural Resource Management

The purpose of the expert consulation was to review of current policies that affect the management of livestock and natural resources, focussing on sub-regions and different agro-ecological settings and the identification of policy trade-off. Presentations/resource papers were delivered from each of the five different sub-regions of the Latin American/Caribbean region (Amazon/Brazil; Andean countries/highlands; Central American countries and Mexico; Southern Cone; Caribbean).

The aim is not to serve as a primer or textbook on the chosen subject (this clearly would he impossible given the limited size of the journal) but rather to present a series of analyses on specific aspects that help to spark interest and awareness.

Research on land tenure insecurity on the Zambian Copperbelt in the context of the privatisation of the mines was commissioned by Oxfam, and was carried out in August 1998 and the final report written in November 1998. It contains five sections: background (including historical and legal); problems (including ‘back to the land’, conflicts in the forests, squatters, Lands Act 1995, democracy); case studies (Chingola, Kitwe, Mufulira, Solwezi); some questions; recommendations. Report has led to some very positive developments for people affected.
