ABSTRACTED FROM INTRODUCTION: This report explores the relationships between land tenure security and food security in Laos, with comparison to other developing countries. The purpose of the study is to better understand these linkages in order to recommend pathways for policies and projects to improve food insecurity by increasing rural poor people's access and tenure security to land.

“Land matters” – more than ever! Can land be dealt with like other resources or – in terms of an economic perspective– forms of capital. Or does it attract particular meanings, sentiments, interests, acquisition strategies or social relations?

The Murillo Barajas family, which has formed the small iniciative ECOMUBA, Ecológico Murillo Barajas, in Gusca, Colombia, tells in this documentary how it makes possible agro-ecological production and how the countryside is an economic and living option.

El ejemplo de doña Clementina muestra la lucha y las nuevas alternativas de vida a la población basadas en la innovación y el conocimiento con la gestión integral dentro de la finca como principio de sostenibilidad. Se constituye en una caso que muestra una experiencia inspiradora de retorno al ámbito rural.

Land acquisitions continue to be an important trend

Large-scale land acquisitions continue to be an important issue for governments, development organisations, NGOs and farmers’ organisations all over the world; this remains the case even in times of global economic slowdown, recession and crisis. The scale of this trend and its significant impacts on rural transformation and livelihoods make it necessary to further monitor, observe and positively influence such deals wherever possible.

Despite progressive provisions on gender equality in Tanzania’s land laws, women have little representation in land allocation decisions, including meetings of village councils and village assemblies. Mainstreaming gender in local regulations can help to address this problem.

Land acquisitions, either driven by foreign investments or domestic investment needs have continued to polarize opinions. When this research was proposed, it was premised on arguments by scholars Ruth Meinzen-Dick and Helen Markelova, who had analysed agricultural land deals, and argued that there were potentially two schools of thought about foreign acquisitions over agricultural land.

Kenya is going through a period of intense transition. The country's main development policy, Vision 2030, is just entering the second Medium Term Plan of Implementation from 2013. The development priorities focus extensively on large scale investments, for industrial, irrigated agriculture, utilization of newly discovered natural resources, and infrastructure development. Land is therefore a central commodity for realization of the sought after socioeconomic transformation.

Through collecting data on large-scale land transactions, the Land Matrix increases transparency to foster accountability of investors and other parties involved in large-scale land transactions. The Land Matrix aims to contribute in an innovative and relevant way to the growing movement towards open development - allowing for greater public involvement in critical decisions that affect the lives of land-users around the world.

The LM Africa Focal Point developed a detailed profile of large-scale land acquisitions in Tanzania.

This paper will critically examine the inter relation between land acquisition, development and displacement. In addition, this paper analyses the rights of displaced under Indian and international laws with special reference to recent states different legislation on land acquisition. The present paper also try to consider the impact on land acquisition on displaced people and identifies loopholes in the existing legal framework and propose certain measure for bringing real development in to the life of displaced people.
