As a result of the large number of license applications regarding the development and operation of offshore wind parks (OWPs) that have been made since 2005 to the competent authority RWS – a department of the Dutch Ministry of Transport and Water works, a need has arisen to have insight in the cumulative (additive) effects of OWPs on the North Sea. The cumulative effects in CUMULEO are determined based on four different themes: - birds, - marine mammals and fish, - benthic fauna and - landscape and perception. For each theme a calculation rule is defines, based on a number of assumptions.

In drie studiegebieden werd onderzocht in welke mate inbedding van EHS realisatie in een integrale gebiedsontwikkeling het halen van de originele EHS doelen mogelijk maakt, van welke voorwaarden succes afhangt en of deze manier van realisatie leidt tot een grote ecologische en/of maatschappelijke robuustheid van de EHS. In de drie gebieden (Baakse Beek; Havikerpoort, verbindingszone Gelderland - Utrecht) bleek het integrale proces inderdaad een grote winst voor de robuustheid op te leveren.

In de komende decennia zal de bevolkingsgroei in Nederland geleidelijk tot stilstand komen, waarna waarschijnlijk een daling zal inzetten. De groei verschilt per regio, en als sommige regio's blijven groeien moeten andere noodzakelijkerwijs krimpen. In sommige regio's is de bevolking al aan het dalen, en andere krijgen in de nabije toekomst met krimp te maken. Dit proces zal op regionaal niveau aanzienlijke sociale en economische gevolgen hebben.

De reconstructie van de zandgebieden is in de fase van uitvoering van de gemaakte plannen. Waar er bij de vaststelling van de reconstructieplannen niet of nauwelijks problemen waren, ontstaat er bij de uitvoering veel maatschappelijke onrust. Daarbij spitst de discussie zich vooral toe op de komst van zogenaamde megastallen. Door veel burgers wordt deze ontwikkeling als onwenselijk gezien. In de gemeente Gemert-Bakel in de provincie Noord-Brabant – één van de pilotgebieden van de reconstructie – komt op een voortvarende manier de uitvoering wel van de grond.

De Rotterdamse haven breidt uit in natuurgebied. Om de effecten van de aanleg van de Tweede Maasvlakte te compenseren, is een deel van de Natura 2000-kustdelta bij Rotterdam aangewezen als bodembeschermingsgebied. Zes onderzoeksinstellingen, waaronder IMARES, onderdeel van Wageningen UR, volgen er de ecologische veranderingen.

Werken met groenblauwe dooradering (GBDA) staat gelijk aan duurzame ontwikkeling van het landschap. GBDA is de fysieke basis voor het creëren van economische, ecologische en sociale waarde. In deze handreiking laten we zien dat de verbinding tussen het fysieke systeem en de gecreëerde waarde centraal staat. In het ontwerpproces wordt het fysieke ontwerp afgestemd op de verwachte waarde. “Je krijgt wat je met elkaar hebt afgesproken”. De flexibiliteit van de vorm van GBDA zorgt er voor dat aanpassingen altijd mogelijk zijn.
