Water Resources Management in the Ganges Basin

April, 2016

The most difficult water resources management challenge in the Ganges Basin is the imbalance between water demand and seasonal availability. More than 80 % of the annual flow in the Ganges River occurs during the 4-month monsoon, resulting in widespread flooding. During the rest of the year, irrigation, navigation, and ecosystems suffer because of water scarcity. Storage of monsoonal flow for utilization during the dry season is one approach to mitigating these problems.

Coping with Water Scarcity in Agriculture: a Global Framework for Action in a Changing Climate

Policy Papers & Briefs
March, 2016

Water scarcity is one of the greatest challenges of the twenty-first century. Agriculture is both a cause and a casualty of water scarcity. It accounts for an estimated 70 percent of global water withdrawals, with freshwater resources heavily stressed by irrigation and food production. While demand for water for agriculture and other uses are increasing rapidly, climate change also affects fresh water resources negatively both in terms of quantity and quality.

With changes in weather patterns and intensifying anthropogenic water use, there is an increasing need for spatio-temporal information on water fluxes and stocks in river basins. The assortment of satellite-derived open-access information sources on rainfall (P) and land use/land cover (LULC) is currently being expanded with the application of actual evapotranspiration (ETact) algorithms on the global scale.

This thesis focused on the use of soil and water conservation (SWC) planning tools to address two ecosystem services (ES’s), erosion control (EC) and dry season baseflow enhancement (BF). The study site was a headwater catchment encompassing Gudo Beret town located in the central sub-humid highlands of Ethiopia.
