Effect of different growth conditions on physiological characteristics in two genotypes of Urochloa humidicola

The grass species Urochloa humidicola adapts to different environmental conditions, primarily waterlogging. Accession CIAT679 stands out for its adaptation to acidic soils of low fertility and easy propagation, while hybrid Uh08 1149 excels in agronomic characteristics and high capacity of Biological Nitrification Inhibition (BNI). This study aimed to evaluate physiological characteristics of these two U. humidicola genotypes in three contrasting growth conditions: hydroponic system, low-fertility soil, and high-fertility soil.

Two important risks faced by many smallholder farmers in Sub-Saharan Africa are erratic weather patterns and insecure land tenure. It is likely these risks will increasingly interact as projections of more erratic weather make small-scale farming more difficult and demand for rural land grows. This paper asks how farmers in Western Tanzania view these compound risks and the influence this has on levels of investment in adaptive agricultural technologies and the demand for land certification in a lab-in-the-field setting.

The beneficial microorganisms can be used as efficient, non-chemical and sustainable alternatives for adopting effective soil restoration programmes and revegetation schedules in chemical and industrial-contaminated sites, including treating degraded lands contaminated with toxic chemicals and pesticides.

Implementing and evaluating gender-transformative approaches in agrifood systems: What does the evidence say?

The evidence base for the effectiveness of gender-transformative approaches (GTAs) in agriculture and food system interventions is small and weak, and many studies do not focus on specifically evaluating these approaches and methods.
While the very limited quantitative evidence suggests that interventions that integrate GTAs have weak or no effects on many outcomes for women’s empowerment outcomes (including gender norms), qualitative evidence shows that, in some instances, shifts in gender roles could eventually lead to change in gender norms.
