In order to support livelihoods, enhance food security, restore ecosystem services, and reduce pressure on forests, degraded land can be restored by utilising alternative land-use systems (ALUS), such as silviculture, silvipasture, and hortipasture techniques. ALUS significantly modify the dynamics of soil nutrients in both the surface and subsurface layers.

Mangrove forest in Lubuk Kertang Village, West Brandan sub-district has been converted around 20 ha annually (1996–2016) into various non-forest land use. Rehabilitation can be a solution to restore the condition of the ecosystem so that it can resume its ecological and economic functions. This paper discusses the evaluation of mangrove rehabilitation carried out by planting 6000 propagules in December 2015 and 5000 seedlings in May 2016 with Rhizophora apiculata species in abandoned ponds. Monitoring was carried out every 6 months from 2016 to 2022.

The most visited provincially administered park in Hanzhong City, the South Lake Scenic Area, is degrading the Masson Pine forest communities. Determining and repairing the landscape degradation and impacts on recreational value due to the degraded community structure is essential for restoring the environment of the southern Qinling Mountains. By evaluating the degree, trend, and pattern (DTP) of impacts, we identified the degradation status of the plant community in the South Lake Scenic Area in the past 20 years.

Forestry work involves scientific management and the effective utilization of forest land resources, and finding economical, efficient and accurate acquisition methods for forest land resource information. In previous land-use classification research, machine learning algorithms have achieved good results, and Sentinel public data have been used in various remote sensing applications. However, there is a paucity of research using these data to evaluate the performance of machine learning algorithms in the extracting of complex forest land resource information.

Collective forests are lands held collectively by either rural or indigenous communities based on a shared history, language, culture, or lineage. It is an institutional arrangement in which communities are involved wholly or partly in decision-making and contribute knowledge and labour to achieve healthy forests and social well-being.

Conserving Potential and Endangered Species of Pericopsis mooniana Thwaites in Indonesia

Indonesia has around 4000 wood species, and 10% (400) of species are categorized as commercial wood. One species is kayu kuku (Pericopsis mooniana Thwaites), native to Southeast Sulawesi. This species is considered a fancy wood used for sawn timber, veneer, plywood, carving, and furniture. The high demand for wood caused excessive logging and threatened its sustainability. In addition, planting P. mooniana has presented several challenges, including seedling production, viability and germination rate, nursery technology, and silviculture techniques.

Effect of Land Use and Land Cover Change on Plant Diversity in the Ghodaghodi Lake Complex, Nepal

The Ghodaghodi Lake Complex is a Ramsar site, Nepal’s first bird sanctuary, and has significant ecological and economic values. The lake complex is in the western part of the lowland of the Terai region. Numerous studies indicate a relation between the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), land use, and land cover with plant diversity. However, the association between terrestrial plant diversity and NDVI in the Ghodaghodi Lake Complex is unknown but has important implications due to potential land use changes.

Forest fires are among the most critical natural tragedies threatening forest lands and resources. The accurate and early detection of forest fires is essential to reduce losses and improve firefighting. Conventional firefighting techniques, based on ground inspection and limited by the field-of-view, lead to insufficient monitoring capabilities for large areas. Recently, due to their excellent flexibility and ability to cover large regions, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have been used to combat forest fire incidents.

As the most intuitive manifestation of land use/land cover change, the spatio-temporal evolution of landscape patterns has significant implications for optimizing regional landscape pattern and land use management. Based on multi-period remote sensing data, we selected an optimal scale (570 m) and used the geographic detector model to analyze the spatio-temporal changes in the landscape pattern of a typical hilly area (Yujiang District, Yingtan City, Jiangxi Province) in southern China.

Pine wilt disease (PWD) is greatly serious to Pinus, and there are still no effective therapeutic measures at present. It is necessary to explore a method of early diagnosis of PWD and to study rehabilitation treatment technology for diseased plants diagnosed early. This paper searched for infected pine trees in natural pine forests according to various subtle symptoms and divided the disease development stages. Different doses of 20% emamectin benzoate were injected at different stages, and the symptom development of pine trees was observed after injection.

An Extended Unit Restriction Model with Environmental Considerations for Forest Harvesting

This paper addresses a forest harvesting problem with adjacency constraints, including additional environmental constraints to protect wildlife habitats and minimize infrastructure deployment costs. To this end, we propose an integer programming model to include those considerations during the optimization of the harvest regime of a Mexican forest. The model considered was based on the Unit Restriction Model, a benchmark approach that merges the management units before the optimization process.
