This chapter discusses the process of building an Food and Nutrition Security policy in Cali. The conclusion, asks a number of key questions as part of an analysis of the main driving forces behind the successful construction and formulation.

Underutilized grain crops are an essential part of the food system that supports humankind. A number of these crops can be found in China, such as barley, buckwheat, broomcorn millet, foxtail millet, oat, and sorghum, which have characteristics such as containing more nutritional elements, being resistant to biotic and abiotic stresses, and having strong adaptability to poor environments. The diversity of these crops provides options for farmers’ livelihoods and healthy food for the population.

In order to facilitate sustainability transitions for food procurement programs, the Alliance of Bioversity-CIAT is developing a decision-support tool to evaluate and monitor the socio-economic and environmental impacts of different food procurement scenarios. Such a “Feed Me Sustainably” (FMS) tool can help build a more reliable evidence-base for policy-makers, food procurement managers, and other key stakeholders to address the challenges and opportunities for improving the sustainability and food security outcomes from school meal procurement programs.

The importance of the food environment in influencing dietary choices of consumers has been widely acknowledged, but little attention has been paid to the urban food environment in Africa despite the rise in incidence of obesity and other nutrition-related noncommunicable diseases (NR-NCDs). We contribute to the literature on urban food environments by conducting an observational macro-scan of the food environment in three cities – Accra, Cape Coast, and Koforidua – with a view to unravelling the nature of the urban food environment in Ghana.

Aquaculture plays an increasingly important role in meeting the rising global demand for fish fuelled by economic and demographic growth. However, in many middle-income countries, aquaculture is constrained by rising labour costs, limited input supply, environmental concerns, and infectious diseases. In this paper, we developed a multi-species, multi-sector equilibrium model and applied it to the fishery sector of Egypt, a leading aquaculture producer in Africa, to examine these barriers.

Scaling of innovations is a key requirement for addressing societal challenges in sectors such as agriculture, but research for development programs struggles to make innovations go to scale. There is a gap between new complexity-aware scientific theories and perspectives on innovation and practical approaches that can improve strategic and operational decision-making in research for development

This fact sheet describes the course that provides guidance on driving reforms that strengthen policy, legal, regulatory and institutional frameworks for responsible agricultural investment (RAI). Specifically, the course provides support to design the reform strategy, establish multi-stakeholder consultation processes for decision-making and enhance the role of regulatory processes in creating an enabling environment for responsible agricultural investment.

Ces dernières années, plusieurs grands facteurs sont intervenus qui font que le monde n’est plus en voie de mettre un terme à la faim et à la malnutrition sous toutes ses formes d’ici à 2030. Les difficultés n’ont fait que grandir en raison de la pandémie de covid-19 et des mesures qui ont été prises pour l’endiguer. Le présent rapport contient la première évaluation mondiale de l’insécurité alimentaire et de la malnutrition pour l’année 2020 et donne une idée de ce à quoi ressemblerait la faim en 2030, dans un scénario encore compliqué par les effets prolongés de la pandémie de covid-19.

The aim of this paper is to consolidate lessons from existing evidence that demonstrates the role of equitable access and tenure security to land in achieving sustainable food systems transformation, and subsequently, for the overall achievement of the SDGs. It makes the case of the importance of reforming and securing access and tenure rights to land and natural resources.

These messages were developed based on the field experience in fragile and crisis affected contexts of UN-Habitat and the partners of the Global Land Tool Network and the HLP Area of Responsibility of the Global Protection Cluster. They are a quick reference on how to empower
women and protect their housing, land and property rights in fragile and crisis affected contexts and why this is an essential element to sustain peace and stability.

The Global Programme is commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), co-funded by the European Union and works in Benin, Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Ethiopia, Laos, Madagascar, Peru (completed in 2021), Uganda and Paraguay (completed in 2018).
