Ukraine’s tenurial tangle: Housing, land and property restitution in the Russian war

Peer-reviewed publication

Ukraine

The severity of the population dislocation and destruction of housing, land and property (HLP) in the Ukraine war has driven efforts for starting reconstruction planning prior to the war's end. This comes with the realization that re-covery will entail considerable preparation, including ef-forts at using seized Russian assets to finance it. Engaging in HLP restitution and compensation will be a primary re-covery challenge, with the Ukrainian government moving forward with legislation for facilitating this.

Housing, land and property restitution after wars takes decades: Ukraine can change this

Ukraine is poised to transform the process of housing, land and property (HLP)

restitution and compensation after wars. The Russian invasion of Ukraine has displaced

more than 13.5 million people (UNHCR 2023) and created massive destruction and

damage to the country’s HLP. Initial efforts at recovery along with counter-offensives

have stabilized large areas of the country and liberated others, to which displaced

Ukrainians are now beginning to return (Duggar 2022; Conkling 2022). The Ukrainian

With over 14 million people now displaced from their housing, land, and property (HLP) in Ukraine there is considerable concern about the reconstruction and restitution process. This is particularly significant in Ukraine given that destruction of HLP appears a purposeful effort on the part of Russian forces. The Ukrainian Prime Minister emphasized the importance of reconstruction and restitution planning before the war is over.

In Pursuit of Local Solutions for Climate Resilience: Sensing Microspatial Inequities in Heat and Air Pollution within Urban Neighborhoods in Boston, MA

Peer-reviewed publication
December, 2022
Global

Environmental hazards vary locally and even street to street resulting in microspatial inequities, necessitating climate resilience solutions that respond to specific hyperlocal conditions. This study uses remote sensing data to estimate two environmental hazards that are particularly relevant to community health: land surface temperature (LST; from LandSat) and air pollution (AP; from motor vehicle volume via cell phone records).

Impact of Urban Heat Island on Formation of Precipitation in Indian Western Coastal Cities

Rapid urbanization is leading to a drastic hike in anthropogenic activities and urban surface alterations As a result there are many repercussions one of them being higher temperatures in urban areas when compared to rural areas This phenomenon is termed Urban Heat Island UHI The impacts of urban surface characteristics climate and population density on UHI have been extensively studied However the influence of UHI on the local climate remains elusive Relatively few studies demonstrate interrelation between UHI population density and unanticipated precipitation events Therefore it is import

Adaptive Strategies Used in Urban Houses to Overheating: A Systematic Review

Nigeria

Recently urban regions are experiencing prolonged heat exposure due to climate change and increased population expansion Physiological psychological and behavioural measures improve residents thermal comfort to solve the overheating issues generated by the scenario However adaptive strategies have not been clearly categorized based on the building construction process This paper systematically reviews 101 documents published from 2013 to 2023 across 22 countries with a focus on Nigeria Using descriptive statistics and content analysis we identify and categorize 52 adaptive strategies into f

Influence of Urban Street Vending on Pedestrian Experience and Behaviour: A Systematic Quantitative Review

Urban street vending is an integral part of everyday public life and can contribute to vibrant and lively streets Yet few cities formally integrate this activity into public space design This is because street vending is a highly contested although transformative phenomenon that has complex interrelationships with other urban entities This paper systematically and quantitatively assesses the breadth and depth of academic literature that studied such a relationship more specifically the influence of street vending on pedestrians experiences and behaviours and thereby identifies gaps in the e

Efforts to thwart the trafficking of conflict commodities to finance wars constitute an ongoing endeavour. As specific approaches become effective for certain commodities, belligerent actors pursue new forms of exploitation. The trafficking of housing, land and property (HLP) rights in war zones has now reached a pervasiveness, lucrativeness and severity to warrant significant attention on the derivation of countermeasures.

The ongoing use of landscape-based conflict commodities — diamonds and other minerals, timber, wildlife, etc. — to finance wars continues to evolve. The success with which such commodities can be transacted to support militaries, militias and insurgencies has led belligerents to innovate with additional commodities. Housing, land and property (HLP) rights within war zones have belatedly joined the list of conflict commodities that are subject to transaction, and to such an extent as to warrant significant concern.

Assessing the Influence of Land Use/Land Cover Alteration on Climate Variability: An Analysis in the Aurangabad District of Maharashtra State, India

Peer-reviewed publication
December, 2021
India

Examining the influence of land use/land cover transformation on meteorological variables has become imperative for maintaining long-term climate sustainability. Rapid growth and haphazard expansion have caused the conversion of prime agricultural land into a built-up area. This study used multitemporal Landsat data to analyze land use/land cover (LULC) changes, and Terra Climate monthly data to examine the impact of land transformation on precipitation, minimum and maximum temperature, wind speed, and soil moisture in the Aurangabad district of Maharashtra state in India during 1999–2019.
