Abstract

This chronology has been researched as supplementary material for the Land Portal country profile on Burundi and the 2024 data story (forthcoming) on the challenges of restoring land rights in post conflict settings. 

There is a correlation between socio-economic development, human rights and the empowerment of men and women to participate at all levels of decision making. Secure land rights are an important precondition for the achievement of these goals, including and the realisation of a broad spectrum of human rights: adequate housing, equality, food, health, work and education.

Bangladesh summer monsoon rainfall (BSMR), typically from June through September (JJAS), represents the main source of water for multiple sectors. However, its high spatial and interannual variability makes the seasonal prediction of BSMR crucial for building resilience to natural disasters and for food security in a climate-risk-prone country. This study describes the development and implementation of an objective system for the seasonal forecasting of BSMR, recently adopted by the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD).

Zambia has historically qualified as a regional model of stability and peace. However, this status is being undermined by several socio-political factors, including deeply entrenched patterns of social inequality and gender discrimination, high levels of poverty and youth unemployment, as well as recurring episodes of electoral violence. Climate and extreme weather events compound most of these vulnerabilities and even create new ones, generating societal dynamics that will likely increase social tensions with greater risk of insecurity.

CGIAR Initiative on Climate Resilience (ClimBeR) focuses on seven representative, low and middle income countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America naming Kenya Morocco, Senegal, Zambia, Philippines, Sri Lanka and Guatemala.

La violencia ejercida contra los cuerpos de las mujeres también es una violencia ejercida contra los territorios. Para las mujeres negras, indígenas y mestizas del Bajo Atrato sus cuerpos son parte sustantiva de los territorios y, desde allí, lo han construido y defendido. Los ríos, ciénagas y quebradas son la extensión de sus brazos y sus piernas, aguas en las que permanecen sumergidas desarrollando labores cotidianas junto a otras mujeres, sus hijos e hijas. En dicha construcción y defensa, sus cuerpos-territorios han sido fuertemente despojados y violentados.

ABSTRACT African culture and tradition on matrilineal land ownership are on the verge of disappearing. Land ownership in rural communities remains an important cultural dimension to secure livelihoods, economic growth, and sustainable development. Gender relations continue to interfere culture and tradition of matrilineal communities. Migration has changed the community and influenced the land ownership transformation from women to men.

A local famer-herder conflict over grazing rights in the Mauritanian-Senegal border region has triggered a spiral of violence between Senegalese and Mauritanians in the southern Senegal River bank and different Mauritanian cities. This escalation has to be understood against the background of persistent racism and discrimination of the ‘black’ population of Mauritania.
