The session examined the intricate challenges that arise when customary and statutory land governance systems intersect, particularly under the pressures of climate change. Insights from multiple regions illuminated the complexities involved in managing land resources where traditional authorities and legal frameworks coexist, occasionally leading to conflicts. Participants contributed perspectives from both Anglophone and Francophone regions, highlighting the delicate balance between traditional knowledge systems and formal regulations. The discussions underscored the pivotal role of local voices and traditional leadership in shaping governance, especially in managing community lands. These perspectives highlighted the practical challenges of integrating customary practices with statutory requirements, particularly in the face of environmental changes. The session’s dialogue centered on the need for a comprehensive approach that respects the strengths of both governance systems, fostering resilience and sustainability in land management. The synthesis of these insights emphasized the urgency of creating inclusive frameworks capable of accommodating the complexities of diverse governance structures, while also ensuring effective climate adaptation strategies.
