Approximately 40 percent of the world’s land is used for crop production and pasture, but 800 million people remain food insecure and as many as 2 billion are malnourished. In the coming years, ensuring the world’s poor and vulnerable have access to and control over land will be critical to prevent devastating food shortages and starvation.

Indigenous Guarani Occupy Transmission Tower in Brazil to Demand Land Rights

Activists disconnected transmission towers as part of a protest demanding that their lands be returned.

A group of Indigenous Guarani activists have occupied Jaragua National Park and switched off transmission towers in Sao Paulo to protest against the privatization of state-protected nature reserves by the government of President Michel Temer.

"The main consequence will be the reduction of our lands and our culture. It will end vegetation and will grow real estate speculation," Guarani leader of the Jaragua reserve Thiago Enrique said, according to Brasil de Fato.

India: House passes land rights to slum dwellers Bill

BHUBANESWAR: Four bills including the much-awaited Odisha Land Rights to Slum Dwellers Bill, 2017 were passed in the Assembly on Wednesday.Introducing the Odisha Land Rights to Slum Dwellers Bill, 2017 in the Assembly, Housing and Urban Development Minister Niranjan Pujari said it is a historical decision of the State Government to provide land and housing units to the urban poor living in different slums. The Bill will provide land to slum dwellers residing in Municipalities and Notified Area Councils (NACs) of the State.


Land rights for Zambian women still far off

Lusaka - When Zambian Lands Minister Judith Kapijimpanga announced recently that government had directed local authorities to intensify land allocation to women with immediate effect, there was general approval.

When she urged the usually truculent traditional rulers to encourage women to own land of which 90 percent was under-utilised, the women's movements said they had scored a victory.

But not everyone is optimistic. The Zambia National Land Alliance, a non-governmental organisation reviewing the land policy, says all this sounds well, but will be a long time coming.

Cameroon Forest People: Land Rights Abuses Threaten Survival

Leaders of Cameroon's indigenous forest peoples say their survival is at risk if they are further deprived of access to the lands that are the source of their livelihoods.

Speaking in Cameroon's capital, Yaoundé, indigenous representatives said they had experienced increasingly serious violations of their land rights by palm oil and other agro-industries, mining firms and timber concessions, as well as the process of creating protected areas on their ancestral lands.
