NEWS: Land Portal welcomes 2024 World Bank Land Conference materials into the Land Library

December 3, 2024 — At the Land Portal, we are committed to advancing the accessibility and long-term sustainability of knowledge on land governance. The World Bank Land Conference is one of the premier venues for knowledge exchange on land, and we were thrilled when the organizers requested our support in making the 2024 conference session materials available to the public in our Land Library, which now hosts over 73,000 publications on land governance. 

We recognize the significant value of preserving and sharing these insights beyond the duration of the conference, ensuring that participants and stakeholders continue to access, reflect on, and build upon the knowledge shared during the event.

We have carefully curated and preserved over 100 Powerpoint presentations from 69 sessions from the 2024 conference. Our team also enhanced each session with metadata and detailed abstracts to ensure that the key insights from each session are findable, discoverable, and accessible by anyone. 

This work exemplifies our broader mission to provide a lasting, accessible platform for knowledge that can shape informed decision-making in land governance. By offering this space, we hope that valuable resources remain available for years to come, contributing to the ongoing dialogue and development of land policy worldwide. This reflects our commitment to making critical land-related knowledge open, accessible, and impactful in guiding future policies and practices.

The Land Portal continues to support and promote information and knowledge as digital public goods to support free and accessible information on land governance. We are convinced that in an increasingly contested information/disinformation landscape, neutral curators such as the Land Portal Foundation play a vital role.

About the World Bank Land Conference

The theme of the 2024 Conference was "Securing Land Tenure and Access for Climate Action." While land tenure and governance underpin climate change adaptation and mitigation, their foundational role is often overlooked. Insecure or unregistered land tenure undermines the ability and interest of landholders to invest in climate change adaptation and mitigation, including by limiting their access to climate finance and reducing their incentives to adopt sustainable land management practices. Poor land governance—including unclear or overlapping laws and institutions for administering land rights and managing land use trade-offs—limits land access for mitigation, adaptation, and disaster risk management investments. Competition for land and its resources will require strategic decisions on how much land is used, for what purpose, and by whom. These trade-offs will only become more complex to manage over time, since land resources suitable for productive uses are expected to become scarcer as urbanization accelerates and climate impacts become more severe.
The 2024 Conference therefore aimed to highlight effective strategies for securing land tenure and access in support of climate change mitigation and adaption.
