This Act makes provision for the establishment of a traditional authority by a traditional community, e.g. an indigenous social group as defined by this Act. The Act further provides for the establishment of traditional councils and the appointment of a traditional leader, e.g. a chief or traditional councillor and defines functions and powers of these traditional institutions.The traditional authority shall supervise and ensure the observance of customary law by the traditional community and a member of the authority shall have law enforcement powers and among other things, ensure that a member of the community shall use natural resources in an (environmentally) sustainable manner.
