Much of the land in Uganda is subject to customary tenure. Because it is not officially registered, land users fear that they may be forced off their land. Registering land has many benefits: it gives the users more security and means they can invest in the land and pass it on to their children.

On 2 December 2021 the mayor of Mbale City, Cassim Namugali, issued 511 Certificates of Customary Ownership in a colourful ceremony. The event took place at Wanale Division Hall in Mbale City. These are the first ever such certificates to be issued in an urban area in Uganda. Several hundred Mbale residents took part in the ceremony.

A national validation workshop discussed the draft National Land Policy Document of the Democratic Republic of the Congo in Kinshasa on 15–17 November 2021.

The workshop was part of a process that began in November 2018 at the Bukavu interprovincial forum to formulate a new national land policy. The Bukavu forum identified strategic options that were turned into a draft policy document in December 2018. This first draft was submitted to a series of consultations in all 26 provinces in the country with a wide range of stakeholders.

The Netherlands Enterprise and Development Agency (RVO) and the Somalia department of the Netherlands Embassy (EKN) in Kenya are pleased to announce their collaboration with the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the UN Development Programme (UNDP), UN-Habitat and the Regional Coordination Office (RCO) in Somalia in the context of the Saameynta-programme. ‘Saameynta – scaling up solutions to displacement in Somalia’ will be implemented over a period of four years (2022-2024) and the LAND-at-scale contribution amounts to 2 million euro.

Nitidae, l’Observatoire National du Foncier Burkina Faso (ONF-BF), Oxfam Burkina Faso and the Netherlands Enterprise & Development Agency (RVO) are excited to announce their partnership for a LAND-at-scale project in Burkina Faso. Starting this year, the project will run for three years focusing on strengthening land governance for women and youth for increased food security, focusing on the Liptako Gourma region.

The Netherlands Enterprise & Development Agency (RVO) is pleased to announce its collaboration with the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands (EKN) in Bujumbura, ZOA, VNG International and MiPAREC for the implementation of a LAND-at-scale project in Burundi “Amahoro @ Scale - An integrated approach towards improved tenure security and land governance in Burundi”. The intervention will run until 2025 and has a budget of 2.8 million Euros.

Fifteen years later, and a billion dollars in funding, AGRA’s promise to double productivity and incomes for 30 million smallholder farming households by 2020 while reducing food insecurity by 50 per cent has not been fulfilled.
