CIRAD is a French research centre working with developing countries to tackle international agricultural and development issues.
Status
CIRAD (Centre de coopération internationale en recherche agronomique pour le développement) is a public industrial and commercial enterprise (EPIC) under the joint authority of the Ministry of Higher Education and Research and the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs.
Mandate
CIRAD works with the whole range of developing countries to generate and pass on new knowledge, support agricultural development and fuel the debate on the main global issues concerning agriculture.
CIRAD is a targeted research organization, and bases its operations on development needs, from field to laboratory and from a local to a global scale.
Activities
CIRAD's activities involve the life sciences, social sciences and engineering sciences, applied to agriculture, food and rural territories.
CIRAD works hand-in-hand with local people and the local environment, on complex, ever-changing issues: food security, ecological intensification, emerging diseases, the future of agriculture in developing countries, etc

Ce rapport, réalisé par des expert fonciers renommés, est le résultat d’un projet de recherche de trois ans qui a rassemblé quarante membres et partenaires de l’ILC pour examiner les caractéristiques, moteurs, impacts et tendances d’un phénomène – les pressions commerciales sur les terres - en augmentation.

Ce rapport présente la synthèse des conclusions du projet1 sur les Pressions commerciales sur les terres dans le monde, coordonné par le Secrétariat de la Coalition internationale pour l’accès à la terre (ILC) avec le soutien d’un de ses membres, le CIRAD (Centre de coopération internationale en recherche agronomique pour le développement), et la collaboration de plus de quarante organisations locales et de la société civile, universitaires et instituts de recherche du monde entier.
Polymotu : A new concept of island-based germplasm bank based on an old Polynesian practice
The Polymotu concept (poly=many, motu=island) is to use the geographical isolation of special sites for conservation and reproduction of individual varieties of plants, trees and even animals. This concept is mainly derived from previous initiatives in conservation of coconut palms by ancient Polynesians and some contemporary Thais. A quite similar concept has also been used by New Zealanders for conservation of endangered bird species.
