Influence of land use on organic carbon pool and chemical properties of Vertic Cambisols in central and southern Italy

Land use strongly influences soil properties and unsuitable practices lead to degradation of soil and environmental quality. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of different land uses on some chemical properties of soils developed from Pliocene clays, within hilly environments of central and southern Italy. The areas investigated are located in Vicarello di Volterra (Pisa, Tuscany), S. Quirico d'Orcia (Siena, Tuscany) and Soveria Simeri (Catanzaro, Calabria).

Comparison of vegetation water contents derived from shortwave-infrared and passive-microwave sensors over central Iowa

Retrieval of soil moisture content using the vertical and horizontal polarizations of multiple frequency bands on microwave sensors can provide an estimate of vegetation water content (VWC). Another approach is to use foliar-water indices based on the absorption at shortwave-infrared wavelengths by liquid water in the leaves to determine canopy water content, which is then related to VWC.

Direct-seeded rice culture in Sri Lanka: Lessons from farmers

About 95% of the rice grown in Sri Lanka is direct-seeded (wet- and dry-seeding). The average rough rice yield in irrigated predominantly direct-seeded dry zone (DZ) is about 5.0tha⁻¹and in the wet zone (WZ) it is about 3.3tha⁻¹. However the average realizable yield in DZ and WZ are 8tha⁻¹ and 5tha⁻¹ respectively. A survey was conducted to understand the cultural practices, farmers' perceptions and the reasons for the yield gap in direct-seeded rice culture in Sri Lanka.

PV site suitability analysis using GIS-based spatial fuzzy multi-criteria evaluation

This paper presents some preliminary results from a research study conducted on solar energy resource assessment in Oman. GIS-based spatial multi-criteria evaluation approach, in terms of the FLOWA module was used to assess the land suitability for large PV farms implementation in Oman. The tool used applies fuzzy quantifiers within ArcGIS environment allowing the integration of a multi-criteria decision analysis. Land suitability analysis for large PV farms implementation was carried out for the case study of Oman.

Trophic assessment of streams in Uruguay: A Trophic State Index for Benthic Invertebrates (TSI-BI)

Human activities are radically changing natural land cover and increasing the delivery of soil, organic compounds, nutrients, toxic agrochemicals and other contaminants to aquatic ecosystems. The eutrophication of streams, rivers, lakes, reservoirs and costal zones is one of the most important consequences of human activities. In this study we assessed the trophic status of 28 wadeable stream reaches of the Santa Lucía basin, an important economic region of Uruguay. We developed a Trophic State Index of Benthic Invertebrates (TSI-BI), the first of its kind for South American lotic systems.
