Data is open if it can be freely accessed, used, modified and shared by anyone for any purpose - subject only, at most, to requirements to provide attribution and/or share-alike. Specifically, open data is defined by the Open Definition and requires that the data be A. Legally open: that is, available under an open (data) license that permits anyone freely to access, reuse and redistribute B. Technically open: that is, that the data be available for no more than the cost of reproduction and in machine-readable and bulk form.

UNITED NATIONS, Nov 13 2018 (IPS) - A new landmark initiative aims to make quality data and tools available to the international community in order to combat an “existential crisis”: land degradation.

The Land Degradation Neutrality Initiative (LDN), launched by United Nations-backed partnership the Group of Earth Observations (GEO), aims to put data directly into the hands of local and national decision makers to help stop and reverse environmental degradation.

This is an initiative of the Climate Change Directorate (CCD), the lead agency of the government on national climate change plans and actions. The Lao DECIDE Info is an initiative of the Government of the Lao PDR that strives to improve access to key data and information for development planning and well-informed decision-making in the Lao PDR. The platform hosts a wide range of information from the social, economic, environmental and agricultural sectors and allows to navigate, visualise, combine and download the data at different level of spatial disaggregation.
