Agriculture plays a key dual role in Kenya. It provides livelihoods for 75% of the country’s population and supports 80% of its rural population. Crucially, it helps the country to meet its food security goals, which is increasingly challenging with Kenya’s population doubling over the last 25 years. Agricultural innovation in general, and SAI innovation in particular are important for Kenya given this central role of agriculture in Kenya along with the key role Kenya plays in East Africa.

This report investigates the functioning and outcomes of the multi-stakeholder platforms established in Tanzania. The study focused on two platforms in Kilolo and Lushoto districts and analyzed their activities to support scaling agricultural innovations. The findings show that the platforms are successful in network building and knowledge dissemination. However, there is a low participation of women and young people.

Building Systemic Resilience against Climate Variability and Extremes (ClimBeR) is a Climate Resilience Initiative of CGIAR which aims to transform the climate adaptation capacity of food, land, and water systems in the Philippines and 5 countries in Africa (Kenya, Morocco, Senegal, and Zambia) and Latin America (Guatemala).

The 2021 United Nations Food Systems Summit (UNFSS) presented the opportunity to apply an agri-food systems approach to Africa’s existing agricultural and food security efforts. The dialogues provided platforms for governments, businesses, communities and civil society to identify pathways towards resilient and inclusive agri-food systems and to reflect on the benefits of the approach and propose strategies for its mainstreaming.

Presentation on the implications of the challenges faced in the 21st century for sustainable rangeland restoration in dry areas. In addition to the limiting and successful factors that affected large-scale rehabilitation efforts. The presentation was performed by Mounir Louhaichi as a guest lecture on Exploring World Agriculture to students at the College of Agricultural Sciences at Oregon State University.

A study was carried out to profile potential mechanization hire service models in four counties in Kenya. The study profiled 6 models for mechanized hire services in agriculture that can be tapped depending on context of the farmers.

Led by the International Water Management Institute (IWMI), WLE is a collaboration between CGIAR Research Centers, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the RUAF Foundation, and several national, regional and international partners. Through these partners, we provide evidence and solutions on natural resource management to influence key decision makers, including governments, international development organizations and financiers.

Brazil has transformed from being a net food importer, to one of the largest agricultural exporters in the world. The country is now one of the top global funders of agricultural innovation, with a special emphasis on funding R&D for sustainable agriculture. While food insecurity and environmental challenges exist in many parts of Brazil, social programs and funding in innovation have helped those in need.

Results from the CGIAR Research Program on Water Land and Ecosystems (WLE) demonstrate how
new evidence and innovations contribute to sustainable intensification of agriculture at landscape
level. WLE’s solutions support producing more nutritious food while managing natural resources
more productively and sustainably in the face of critical climate change, health, demographic, and
economic challenges.

IFPRI research team published a book "Climate-Smart Agriculture in South Asia" that contains various methodology for priority setting, land use decision, and policy review. In addition, IFPRI in collaboration with CCAFS has developed an analytical toolkit for climate-smart investment plans at the sub-national level in India. The World Bank Group has shown interest in the concept delineated in the above-mentioned pieces of evidence and research collaboration has been established that will help World Banks' investment decision.

This monitoring and evaluation framework (M&EF) for Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA) has been developed to foster the effective transformation of the agricultural sector toward resilient, low-carbon development, and to check whether the implementation of the Kenya Climate Smart Implementation Framework (KCSAIF) objectives, outcomes, and outputs are proceeding as planned, in order to support optimal planning and efficiency in the utilization of resources.

Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) is the production of plants, fish, insects or animals inside structures, such as greenhouses and buildings, in controlled conditions. In a rapidly urbanizing world, CEA can contribute to sustainable development, e.g. through reduced use of land, water and inputs. There is a need for innovation in policy, technology and business practices to scale up CEA in the Global South sustainably and equitably.
