Case Study: United States Agency for International Development (USAID) investment in innovation for sustainable agricultural intensification

December, 2020
Sri Lanka

USAID has played a crucial role in shaping global shifts in agriculture and sustainable agricultural intensification (SAI) through the decades. The agency has constantly fostered agricultural innovation - from the Green Revolution in the 1960s to the market-economy transition in the 1990s1 . USAID’s more recent work has followed the priorities of the Feed the Future (FTF) initiative, the US government's flagship global hunger and food security initiative.

Digital tools in the potato value chain in Kenya: A landscape analysis

December, 2022
Kenya

Potato sector has a substantial role in Kenya's agriculture, contributing to food security, nutrition, and the national economy. While underscoring the sector's vast potential, this Technical Brief identifies the existing gap between current yields and achievable targets, highlighting the necessity for strategic improvements in farming practices. It accentuates the transformative impact of digital tools in the agricultural landscape, notably accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic and facilitated by the widespread use of mobile technology and internet access in the country.

Climate-smart and resilient rice production practices in the MFS

December, 2022
Global

The rising concerns of over-exploitation of groundwater resources, increasing cost of inputs and cultivation, timely availability of labor and energy, degradation of soil health, and climate change prevail in major agri-food systems in Bangladesh. Thus, reversing the unsustainable way of practicing agriculture to climate-smart agriculture would be key to sustainable agricultural development and productivity.

Adoption levels, barriers, and incentive mechanisms for scaling integrated rice-fish system and alternate wetting and drying in Cote d’Ivoire and Nigeria

December, 2022
Nigeria

This study employed a participatory approach to assess the perceived adoption levels, barriers, and incentive mechanisms for the widespread implementation of the alternate wetting and drying irrigation method and integrated rice-fish system. The findings revealed that the current perceived adoption rates for both technologies were low, ranging from 10 to 15%.

Identifying opportunities for sustainable intensification of mixed farming systems in the Mid-Hills of Nepal by optimal use of water in agriculture

December, 2022
Nepal

Food production and rural livelihoods' food security in Nepal face numerous threats for various reasons. Similar to global trends, the country contends with unpredictable weather patterns, including heat and drought stress on plants, as well as heavy precipitation. Around 80% of Nepal’s population is dependent on subsistence farming for their livelihood, while only 24% of all arable land is irrigated (Suhardiman et al., 2015).

Modeling Vietnam’s Blue Transformation Under Climate Change: A Conceptual Framework

December, 2022
Malaysia

December, 2022
Morocco

As we move closer to sustainability and improving adaptive methods, we're also focusing on addressing the current knowledge gaps, where the ongoing communication between science and policy emphasizes the dedication to convert knowledge into practical solutions.

Gender and climate-resilient agriculture: A review of concepts and practical resources in support of gender-transformative change

December, 2022

To advance the use of gender-transformative approaches in climate-resilient agriculture (CRA), a review of practical resources that could support researchers and practitioners in applying gender and CRA was undertaken. The review consolidates and assesses diverse, practical resources—including research tools, methods and broader guidance—that aim to address gender inequalities/inequities, climate and agriculture, albeit to varying degrees.

Climate-informed agronomic advisories for maize in Colombia: Progress report for the Excellence in Agronomy (EiA) initiative Latin America Use Case

December, 2022
Colombia

Decision making in agriculture has been based on general (blanket) recommendations made by technicians, the farmer's own knowledge or local practices that are adopted as customary for generations. Recognizing the need to generate information to help make site-specific decisions based on traditional agronomic research, this study uses Machine Learning (ML) models and a Global Harmony Search (GHS) methodology to find an optimal solution to the combination of practices that a farmer could implement according to his soil and climate conditions specific to his land.
