Long-term conservation agriculture-based practices impact crop yields, returns and yield stability in rice-wheat rotations in eastern Indo-Gangetic Plains of India

December, 2022
India

South Asia’s rice-wheat system is a regionally unique and crucially important cropping system contributing to staple food production. Over a 16-year period, a comprehensive experimental study on the rice-wheat cropping system indicated that, while wheat yields demonstrated a gradual increase over time, rice yields largely reached a stable level across various management approaches.

Modeling of water availability for food system transformation in Upper Offin Sub-basin and Mankran Micro-watershed of Ghana: a baseline study

December, 2022
Ghana

The increasing population and changes in the climate in Africa demand a more sustainable approach to water usage for improved food and water security in the region. One of the key users of water, agriculture serves as the primary livelihood in Ghana, with a growing focus on cocoa production. To effectively implement sustainable water management strategies, it becomes imperative to conduct hydrological studies, including water balance components and water quality at sub-national and watershed scales. This would assist decision-makers in the proper planning and interventions for agriculture.

Early Warning and Rapid Response System for Pests and Diseases in Ghana

December, 2022
Ghana

The Ghana Cluster of the Accelerating Impacts of CGIAR Climate Research for Africa (AICCRA) project, led by the International Institute for Tropical Agriculture (IITA) and its partners are working on an Early Warning and Rapid Response System for Pests and Diseases (EWRRS-PD) to enhance communication, data sharing, and preparedness against new risks. Following several preparatory meetings, a workshop was held to validate a partnership agreement between eleven public and private sector institutions whose core mandate relates to the subject.

NextGen agroadvisory expanding in scope and extent: The effort to cover more crops and bundle with lime advisory

December, 2022
Global

Accurate crop yield prediction is crucial for optimizing agricultural practices and ensuring food security. The NextGen advisory is a fertilizer recommendation system that can be customized for different farming systems, crop types, and locations. The system uses machine learning models to predict site-specific fertilizer rates using filed trial and covariates (soil, topography, and climate) data.

Operationalizing Ukama Ustawi's Learning Alliance for impact

December, 2022
Global

This report is a comprehensive synthesis of insights, discussions, and recommendations stemming from Ukama Ustawi’s (UU’s), Learning Alliance's strategic session held during the Africa Day for Food and Nutrition Security (ADFNS) and the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP) Partnership Platform event in Zambia. The primary focus of the session was to explore practical strategies for operationalizing the Learning Alliance to achieve meaningful impact.

Towards Building Capacity in Climate Information Systems and Climate Smart Agriculture in Africa

December, 2022
Global

Climate change is one of the major concerns mankind will have to deal with for a long period of time. Judicious use of adaptation and mitigation measures are the only avenues for addressing climate change and associated impacts. Building climate science literacy is vital for citizens to understand the impacts of climate change and develop solutions to mitigate climate change and adapt to its effects. AICCRA-RUFORUM partnership aimed at developing continental-wide top-priority course modules in order to build capacity at different levels on the continent.

Potato Seed System Rapid Assessment in Uzbekistan

December, 2022
Uzbekistan

Potato is an important crop in Uzbekistan agriculture for multiple reasons. It contributes to food security and nutrition quality. This crop has been facing pests and diseases with limited efforts to address these issues. This rapid assessment conducted in spring 2023 helps to fill the gap in how the potato seed system is organized and functioning. We used the multi-stakeholder framework to collect information from key actors involved in the potato value chain. Our results show relatively weak ties among all the stakeholders.

Accelerating and scaling up Africa’s climate change adaptation and mitigation actions: Experiences and lessons learned

December, 2022
Global

As part of the 19th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture (RUFORUM), held on 28th October-2nd November 2023 at Palais des Congres in Yaounde, Cameroon, partners of AICCRA (Accelerating Impacts of CGIAR Climate Research for Africa) RUFORUM and WASCAL have organized a side event entitled “Accelerating and scaling up Africa’s climate change adaptation and mitigation actions”.

Strengthening the resilience of silvopastoralists through proven climate smart practices in the semi-arid region of Tunisia

December, 2022
Tunisia

Silvopastoral systems, integrating trees, shrubs, and livestock, offer an innovative approach to sustainable land use. Key to success is the strategic selection of forage crops, tailored to climatic and soil conditions, promoting system resilience and productivity. The field day showcased sustainable restoration practices, with farmers receiving Sulla seeds, marking a transformative step toward sustainable agriculture and improved economic well-being.
