Nature-positive solutions (NPS) seek to address the negative effects of climate change, restore biodiversity, and sustainably manage land and water resources through strategies implemented at farm and community levels, drawing on both traditional and scientific knowledge, while ensuring that agriculture stays within planetary boundaries. Given gender differences in livelihood roles, control over resources, and influence over livelihood decisions, men and women have different needs from and preferences for nature-positive solutions.

The Accelerating Impacts of CGIAR Climate Research for Africa (AICCRA) project aims to enhance access to climate information services (CIS) and validated climate-smart agriculture (CSA) technologies in Africa, to help these countries strengthen the resilience of their agricultural sectors to the threat posed by climate change. Strengthening the capacity of next users, particularly agricultural extension and advisory service (EAS) providers who work to support farmers in Ghana and five other target countries, is crucial for achieving this goal.

Agriculture has played a crucial role in supporting smallholder livelihoods in Bangladesh. Despite being actively involved in various stages of production, including seed sowing, harvesting, and postharvesting, women's contributions are often undervalued. They are often regarded as a cheap labor force and are not given meaningful roles in the supply and value chains. One of the primary challenges they face is the lack of access to and ownership of land, which results in limited and unequal access to resources such as credit, services, markets, and information on modern technologies.

This report presents the outcome of the lessons learned workshop organized by WorldFish in partnership with the AICCRA CSA-Bundle two Accelerator partners working on integrated aquaculture-agriculture systems in Luapula and the Northern Provinces of Zambia.
The main aim of the workshop was to reflect on the experiences, successes, challenges and outcomes of the project to identify valuable insights and takeaways to inform future work.

The Breakthrough Agenda was launched by 45 world leaders at COP 26 and is a commitment to work together this decade to accelerate innovation and deployment of clean technologies, making them accessible and affordable for all this decade. To kick-start this Agenda, countries endorsed Breakthrough goals to make clean technologies and sustainable practices more affordable, accessible and attractive than their alternatives by 2030 in the power, road transport, steel, hydrogen and agriculture sectors.

With the completion of the Project Implementation Plan in October 2022, work setting up the first two-year cycle of GROWING Future Clubs (GFCs) among households with young children in 36 communities began in earnest, focusing first on ensuring agricultural interventions occurred in a timely manner, then nutrition trainings, and getting gender champions in place to initiate gender dialogues at district and local levels. Much is being learned that will inform and improve the integrated intervention by the start of Cycle 2 in December 2023.

Agricultural expansion-led deforestation in Uganda is one of the highest of the world. At the same time, internal migration patterns are strongly inter-linked with agricultural dynamics in the country, as migrants are involved in crop production activities and traditionally play important roles in major crop value chains. Migration for agricultural purposes may complicate the already difficult trade-off between agricultural development and forest preservation. This article investigates how internal migration and commercial agriculture shape deforestation patterns across Uganda.

Introduction

In Nicaragua, land use change and agriculture cause 80% of total greenhouse gas emissions, of which more than half are from livestock. Livestock farming occupies almost 50% of total land area and is a major cause of forestland conversion, especially in the Caribbean region covering over half of the national territory, with 89% of the country’s forests and the highest proportion of poor people.

Water scarcity is already set to be one of the main issues of the 21st century, because of competing needs between civil, industrial, and agricultural use. Agriculture is currently the largest user of water, but its share is bound to decrease as societies develop and clearly it needs to become more water efficient. Improving water use efficiency (WUE) at the plant level is important but translating this at the farm/landscape level presents considerable challenges.

At the end of the module participants will be able to: to identify and demonstrate the Challenges of Climate Change to Soils and Fertility Management; to explain and demonstrate the concepts of Landscape Approach for Achieving Climate Smart Agriculture through Nutrient Management; to demonstrate and apply the Concepts and Principles of Soil Health and Soil Fertility Management for Crop Production, and to demonstrate the Approaches in Nutrient and Water Management for Sustainable Crop Production.
