En diciembre de 1997, la FAO alberg un seminario sobre el pluralismo y el desarrollo forestal y rural sostenible, cuya finalidad era intercambiar informacin y experiencias y encontrar mtodos que permitan optimizar la cooperacin entre distintos grupos interesados en la ordenacin de los recursos forestales. El seminario cont con la presencia de 35 participantes en representacin de organizaciones (y de tipos de organizacin, regiones geogrficas y disciplinas) diferentes. Los artculos de este nmero de Unasylva son adaptaciones de los documentos presentados en ese seminario.

Comme le suggrent les articles de ce numro, les forts contribuent la scurit alimentaire et aux moyens de subsistance durables par bien des aspects, non seulement directement mais aussi indirectement, en renforant les systmes agricoles, en favorisant le dveloppement rural, mais aussi en prservant l'intgrit de l'environnement et en fournissant des possibilits de revenu et d'emploi.

The current publication «State of the Forest Genetic Resources in The Gambia» is issue of country national report presented at The Sub- Regional Workshop FAO/IPGRI/ICRAF on the conservation, management, sustainable utilization and enhancement of forest genetic resources in Sahelian and North-Sudanian Africa (Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, 22-24 September 1998).

Over the past two decades, perspectives on the role of the forest for society have evolved and broadened dramatically; the relatively narrow official view of the forest as primarily a source of wood and a form of protection for upland water resources has been seriously questioned and sometimes even violently opposed in favour of an approach that reflects a wider range of present and future opportunities and demands from forests and forest resources.
