This document provides an overview of the status of forest resources in Asia and the Pacific and their sustainable management through national forest programmes in 30 countries in the region, including new country profiles for Brunei Darussalam, Maldives and the United States of America. The update is based on information derived from a variety of sources, including country reports to the eighteenth Asia Pacific Forestry Commission meeting in Australia in May 2000. Major changes have emerged in forests and forestry policies in recent years.

La sostenibilidad es un factor medular del nuevo Marco Estratégico de la FAO, y es el foco específico del Objetivo Estratégico 2, consistente en un aumento sostenible del suministro de bienes y servicios de la agricultura, la actividad forestal y la pesca. Globally, according to FRA 2000, planted forests accounted for only 5% of forest area, but up to 35% of industrial roundwood supply. This is anticipated to rise to 40-44% by 2020. Planted forests reflect a higher social, environmental and economic importance than their area would suggest. Many countries have existing planted forest data that is not based upon forest inventory, is incomplete and often outdated. Thus it is difficult to measure and plan the quantity and quality of planted forest resources and the provision of goods and services that they supply.
