Despite the high level of political engagement and the wide range of organizations involved in restoration projects from local to global levels, beyond some success stories, restoration is not happening at scale. To address this issue, three CGIAR Research Programs (CRPs) – Forests, Trees and Agroforestry (FTA); Policies, Institutions and Markets (PIM) and Water, Land and Ecosystems (WLE) – decided to bring together their expertise in a joint stocktaking of CGIAR work on restoration.

Food production faces interlinked challenges with increasing uncertainties from the increasing impacts of climate change and variability. The underlying philosophy of CSA is the development and promotion of an integrative approach that results in landscape management for productive croplands, livestock, forests, and fisheries. It aims for improved food and nutrition security and equitable livelihoods. The program seeks to support the achievement of three outcomes i.e.

CGIAR’s NEXUS Gains Initiative aims to realize gains across water, energy, food, and ecosystems (with a focus on forests and biodiversity) in selected transboundary river basins by leading global nexus thinking and providing tools, guidelines, training and facilitation for analysis, and research for development. Work Package 5 of NEXUS Gains specifically aims to develop the capacity of WEFE actors. A core component of the capacity strengthening program is a leadership development package tailored to WEFE nexus leaders, with emphasis on emerging women leaders.

For Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) to make a meaningful contribution to SAI in low- and lower-middle income countries, there is a need for investment in research, capacity development, enterprise initiation, scaling, and creation of enabling environments (through policies at national and sub-national levels). To attract investment and justify policy change, more information is needed on the potential contribution of CEA to sustainable development, and where, how, by whom, and for whom various technologies might be best deployed. The potential contribution of rural women to climate mitigation by being part of the economic cycle is not sufficiently exploited. Economic empowerment through climate adaptation can foster economic growth, promote socio-economic development, reduce poverty, keep environmental problems in check, and increase potential for adaptation which benefits both men and women (Research Gate). The conservation of small livestock agrobiodiversity while creating value addition economic empowerment has considerable potential for enrichening local food system while conserving animal genetic resources.

Ethiopian agricultural production and productivity are strongly affected by weather and climate. Varying climatic conditions bring disparities in food demand and supply, which constitute a challenge for the integration of climate-smart agriculture in the agriculture mix.

A major challenge in natural resource management in developing countries is to pursue conservation objectives while avoiding negative impacts on local livelihoods. Inland capture fisheries provide opportunities to demonstrate an integration of conservation and livelihood objectives when managed as a social-ecological system. While numerous marine no-take reserves have been found effective for the recovery of fisheries, few well-documented examples exist in the freshwater realm.

Small ruminant value chain development started in Ethiopia as part of Livestock and Fish CRP in 2012, and then continued since 2017 as Livestock CRP, in seven sites representing different regions of Ethiopia, production systems and communities. The objective of the initiative was to test technological and institutional innovations that would transform the small ruminant value chain and this involved rigorous procedures.
