Impacts of the land tenure system on sustainable land use in Ethiopia

December, 2020
Ethiopia

On Earth, land is the most vital resource from which living things derive their essential necessities. There are many methods for managing and maintaining this vital resource in a sustainable manner, but it is more important to first understand the root cause of malfunctioning land management strategies. This chapter aims at understanding the underlying causes of socio-economic and policy-related factors affecting the sustainability of land tenure systems in Ethiopia.

Village Endline Survey: Site Analysis Report for Nyando - Katuk Odeyo, Kenya (KE0101)

December, 2020
Kenya

This study used community-level focus group discussions in the seven villages of the Nyando climate-smart villages (CSVs) in Kenya. The discussions were complemented with satellite images from mixed sources and GIS-based analytics to monitor the changes in land use and land cover over the past 10 years (2011-2021).

Characterizing and evaluating the impacts of national land restoration initiatives on ecosystem services in Ethiopia

December, 2019
Ethiopia

Land restoration is considered to be the remedy for 21st century global challenges of land degradation. As a result, various land restoration and conservation efforts are underway at different scales. Ethiopia is one of the countries with huge investments in land restoration. Tremendous land management practices have been implemented across the country since the 1970s.

Accelerating the utilization of climate-smart agriculture technologies and innovations: How existing policies can foster investment decisions?

December, 2022
Global

This Info Note documents AICCRA engagement and technical assistance to 12 countries in West Africa and the Sahel on how to leverage on existing policies to foster investments for scaling CSA technologies. At least one national policy document on climate change exists in each of the countries. Leveraging on the visions and strategic orientations of these climate policies, relevant CSA technologies and innovations were prioritized. Subsequently, need quantification was made.

Dryland crop model based approaches to guide the climate adaptation of crop and livestock systems across scales in Senegal.

December, 2022
Senegal

Sorghum sowing density trial conducted by IRD/IGE/CERAAS with Benin Institute student, combining crop varietal diversity and land management interventions at plot level to improve integrated predictive crop modelling. The vision is to develop crop fitness mapping evidence (interaction with development partner MyAgro for scaling). Initiate a socio-economic study on cross-sectoral fodder resource issue in Senegal with ISRA BAME. Evidence to be presented at crop diversification science policy dialogues 14 Dec 2023 ICRISAT led event-

Creating climate-smart multi-functional landscapes through integrated soil, land and water management practices and contextualized agroadvisory services at different scales in Ethiopia

December, 2019
Ethiopia

Experiences show that integrating restoration efforts at landscape level need to be coupled with intensification efforts at farm/plot level to promote synergy and attain multiple benefits. The approaches followed in the creation of multifunctional landscapes are designed to enable achieving this goal. This report presents project activities and outputs related to approaches, implementation modalities and evidence generation exercises from ‘learning’ and upscaling sites.

Catalogue of sustainable land management and climate smart agriculture practices in Ethiopia

December, 2021
Ethiopia

Massive SLM/CSA practices have been implemented for the last four decades in various agro-ecologies
of Ethiopia. Nevertheless, these practices were not well catalogued in illustrative (pictorial)
representation. Cataloguing Sustainable Land management (SLM) and Climate Smart Agriculture (CSA)
practices, technologies and approaches are important in helping us to understand what we have, where
they are located and what stories they tell. The first attempt is thus being made to catalogue and

The political economy of land-water resource governance in the context of food security in Cambodia

December, 2022
Cambodia

Water is central for a variety of livelihoods, development, economic growth, and food production. It is also very important in the large deltas of South and Southeast Asia. Yet, water is turning into a scare resource and global climate change is making its availability more unpredictable. Commercial interests and infrastructure development are also competing for water resources, sometimes at the expense of local smallholders.

Assessment of the growth in social groups for sustainable agriculture and land management

December, 2019
Global

Until the past half-century, all agriculture and land management was framed by local institutions strong in social capital. But neoliberal forms of development came to undermine existing structures, thus reducing sustainability and equity. The past 20 years, though, have seen the deliberate establishment of more than 8 million new social groups across the world. This restructuring and growth of rural social capital within specific territories is leading to increased productivity of agricultural and land management systems, with particular benefits for those previously excluded.

Property rights and wrongs: Land reforms for sustainable food production in rural Mali

December, 2020
Mali

Agricultural land reforms are crucial to promote investments in sustainable land management and food production amidst accelerating urbanization and increasing population growth. However, notable gaps remain in the literature regarding how land reforms designed at the national level are implemented in localized contexts, especially as they interplay with customary tenure regimes. Adopting an institutional bricolage perspective, we explore interactions between local tenure arrangements and government land reforms and the resulting implications for food production in rural Mali.
