Peri-urban agriculture (PUA) has been widely regarded as a sub-field of multifunctional agriculture for improving the sustainability of urban environments. However, urban sprawl has both negative and positive effects on peri-urban farming, and the research on this issue in Japan is insufficient.

Green infrastructure (GI), as a concept and as a tool for environmental land-use planning at various scales, has burst onto the academic, political, and policy-making scenes in the last two decades. This tool, associated with strategic planning, offers integrated solutions for improving the ecological connectivity and urban resilience of open spaces, especially those affected by processes of urban sprawl, the abandonment of agriculture, and the territorial fragmentation of habitats and traditional agricultural landscapes.

The survival of farms requires innovative adaptation and investment to take advantage of the characteristics of the peri-urban environment. In Ontario, Canada, the Provincial Government passed in 2005 the Greenbelt Act that delimits Ontario’s Greenbelt—an area of 1.8 million acres where land is protected from development around the metropolitan region of the Greater Golden Horseshoe. This paper presents research on farm-level analysis of farmers’ investment decision-making aiming at understanding the impact of Ontario’s Greenbelt on farm investment.

This powerpoint presentation explains how the Solutions Journalism approach is applied on the reporting of agroecological initiatives in the Philippines and their relation with land rights issues. Ce numéro des Cahiers d’Outre-Mer traite d’une question classique de géographie politique, la relation entre ressources et conflits armés, dans un contexte original, celui de la République centrafricaine (RCA). Afin d’introduire les textes qui composent ce dossier, il s’agit d’abord de situer le cas centrafricain par rapport aux principales approches développées dans les sciences sociales sur la thématique des conflits et des ressources, et de trier celles qui semblent le plus opératoires pour éclairer l’imbroglio centrafricain.

This article engages in a comprehensive examination of the intricate dynamics surrounding urban sprawl and land utilization within the peri-urban regions of significant Algerian municipalities, with a specific focus on the city of Oran. 

Employing a methodology rooted in social geography, this study deploys a trio of investigative approaches: documentary analysis, spatio-temporal scrutiny of peri-urban domains, and in-situ field investigations to shed light on the intricate intricacies of land ownership dynamics in the context of urban sprawl.

Urban and peri-urban agriculture (UPA) is widely distributed throughout the Global South. Despite urban population growth and diversifying food habits, UPA delivers an important part of urban food supply, as well as other types of services to cities, such as employment and waste reuse. Nevertheless, the extent and importance of UPA varies between different urban areas, while challenges like limited recognition, land conversion, and water pollution and competition threaten the potential of UPA to contribute to urban resilience.

Dans le Sud du Bénin, le lotissement, une des formes d’aménagement les plus utilisées actuellement, se multiplie jusqu’à atteindre de plus en plus les zones rurales. A cet effet, il impacte sur les activités agricoles et exerce une influence considérable sur le changement de la dynamique d’occupation du sol au détriment notamment des usages agricoles et de leur fonction de ressources alimentaires et paysagères.
