The toolkit advocates for a holistic and participatory multi-stakeholder approach that emphasizes the important role played by governance of rangelands using bottom-up landscape restoration. It also emphasizes the need to ensure that decisions are based on both indigenous knowledge and modern science to address site-specific challenges. Users have access to a collection of Sustainable Rangeland Management (SRM) practices aimed at achieving a neutral level of degradation (LDN) and offering a strong potential to rehabilitate and restore degraded rangeland ecosystems.

Since 2017, ICARDA has been facilitating the transition to improved policies for sustainable management of rangelands in Tunisia. PIM-supported methods and approaches on the quantitative assessment of alternative rangeland governance approaches have been used as inputs into the development of the future new pastoral code.

To strengthen institutional arrangement that link national developing agencies dealing with rangeland rehabilitation and management with the end users (pastoralists and livestock keepers), representatives from ICARDA, Office de l’Elevage et des Pâturages (OEP), and Tunisia's General Directorate for Forestry (DGF), farmers and pastoralists were invited to a day-long workshop on June 6th, 2022, where participants discussed a flexible approach to grazing management to adopt a new flexible grazing management procedure when implementing gdel on rangelands.

The pastoral code aims at achieving a more sustainable management of Tunisia's rangelands. The draft code was informed by ICARDA's research on assessment of rangelands governance under PIM.

Participatory rangeland management (PRM) was developed by ILRI and partners in Ethiopia, piloted and then upscaled. PRM improves the productivity of rangelands and access to resources for local rangelands users (communities). In 2018, the European Union invested Euro 1.5 million in the Piloting of PRM Project in Baringo County, Kenya and six shared grazing lands in Tanzania (targeting 450,000 pastoralists and agropastoralists). In 2020/21 PRM is being upscaled through a USD 30 million investment on 8.8 million hectares in Ethiopia.

Traditional enclosures are widely used by pastoralists in East Africa. However, the response of basic soil properties to the establishment of traditional enclosure management remains poorly understood. The aim of this study was to investigate the impacts of traditional enclosure on soil organic carbon and total nitrogen stock in the Bordade rangelands, eastern Ethiopia. Soil samples were collected from twelve area enclosures and openly grazed areas at a depth of 0-30 cm. The samples were analyzed for soil organic carbon, total nitrogen and bulk density.

Québec, Canada, July 17-20, 2022: For agricultural production, exploiting mountain slopes for rainwater runoff collection is a low-cost practice that supports sustainable agroecological systems and increases yield. To this day, people in rural communities continue to use an ancient and well-known system called Jessour to strengthen agricultural productive capacity and diversify their livelihoods.

The strategic goal of this strategy and the communication supported therein, is to draw attention to the importance of rangelands (and rangeland communities) and their protection and restoration. This will be done through a coordinated effort by ILRI working with international and national partners as part of ILRI’s global livestock for advocacy development (GLAD) work), engaging mainly outside the livestock sector to improve investments and decisions.
