Officials questioned over land deal

Five Phnom Srok district officials were called before the Banteay Meanchey Provincial Administration to explain accusations that they were attempting to sell state land in the protected Ang Trapaing Thmar area that included land belonging to security offices and three armed forces units, a court spokesman said.

Deputy provincial governor Ly Sary identified the officials as Phnom Srok district deputy governor Sao Len, chief of land management office Phnom Srok district Tang Phan, and Poy Char commune chief Khouth Khoun. The other two officials are Sok Rithy and Thoun Lamhinh.

Agrarian reform beneficiaries split from leftist group

Some 37 members of the “Nagkahiusang Mag-Uuma sa Pindasan og Pangibiran” (NAGMAPPA) from the Davao de Oro town of Mabini withdrew their support from the leftist “Kilusan ng Mambubukid sa Pilipinas” (KMP), the Army's 71st Infantry Battalion (71IB) said Thursday.

In a statement on the same day, members of the NAGMAPPA expressed their dismay towards the failed promises of the KMP such as tracts of land.

Mondulkiri sanctuary land grabbers charged

In April, 13 suspects were charged in the Mondulkiri Provincial Court for encroaching on forest land in wildlife sanctuaries at Phnom Prich, Srepok, Nam Lear, and Keo Seima, said Ministry of Environment secretary of state and spokesperson Neth Pheaktra.

The sanctuaries are protected under the Law on Natural Protected Areas. He said the 13 perpetrators violated articles 56, 60, and 62, which all concern destroying natural resources.

Officer held for clearing state land

Major general Chan Sam Ath was detained by Strung Treng Police Commissariat officials last Thursday for allegedly clearing 70ha of state land in Sralao village, Anglong Chrey commune, Thala Barivat district.

Stung Treng provincial administration spokesman Men Kong told The Post on Sunday that the Commissariat will question Sam Ath and arrange a court case, but they have not yet sent the case to court.

Kung said authorities confiscated three pieces of land-clearing equipment during their investigation.

Dedicated entity to administer land in Ethiopia

Advisors at the Ministry of Agriculture (MoA) are proposing a separate entity for the management and administration of land resources in Ethiopia, a recommendation prominent experts in the field have been forwarding for many years.


Pannel of experts who have been working on agricultural reform programs in light of the eight bottlenecks and recommended solutions of the sector identified by the national Home Grown Economic Reform; among these establishing a separate entity to properly manage land issues was a priority.

Analysis reveals corruption more pervasive in countries where money influences political power


 


More than two-thirds of countries – along with many of the world’s most advanced economies – are stagnating or showing signs of backsliding in their anti-corruption efforts, according to the 2019 Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) released today by Transparency International.
