This document builds on the brief paper presented at the 7th Meeting of the UN-REDD Programme Policy Board, held in Berlin, October 2011 (UNREDD/PB7/2011/13), which lays out ways to consider the REDD+ monitoring and information provision needs in the broader context of national development and environmental strategies, at the implementation level.
This paper introduces a Special Issue of Forest Ecology and Management that includes a collection of analytical results from the 2015 Global Forest Resources Assessment (FRA 2015) covering 25 years of forest change (1990–2015). FRA 2015 builds on a series of global assessments that began in 1948 and covers change in forest area and type, volume, biomass and carbon stocking, measures of sustainable forest management, biodiversity and conservation, soil and water protective functions, wood production and a number of socio-economic variables.

Addressing the role of women in forestry is central to sustainable resource management and rural livelihood improvement. Improving women’s access to forest resources and effectively including them in decision making leads to greater investment in children’s welfare and has positive effects on economic growth and sustainable resource management. Opportunities for women to adopt new roles and improve their livelihoods are increasing but gender imbalances still threaten sustainable development.
