In 1998 GIZ (former GTZ) published the “Guiding Principles on Land Tenure in Development Cooperation” in the form of a handbook. The publication enjoyed a warm reception and quickly became a source book among land experts and practitioners in Germany and abroad.

Since then the relevance, sensibility and complexity of land policy and land tenure issues have even increased, among other reasons, due to a new wave of strengthened interest in land and agriculture as an investment opportunity, a situation often referred to as “land grabbing”.

EBG Capital was appointed by the German Development Agency (GIZ) to obtain case studies from selected agricultural investment funds (predominantly private equity investors) to determine “best practice” in Responsible Investment (RI) in agriculture and the use of international RI principles and guidelines to achieve this. We requested a case study of a practical (“on-the-ground”) investment in farmland from 33 agricultural investors from around the world.

In principle, all land in the Lao People's Democratic Republic (Lao PDR) belongs to the National Community, although citizens and legal entities have the right to receive permanent land use rights. Based on data from the Land Matrix database, this paper briefly analyses large-scale land acquisitions in the context of current complex and dynamic land and climate governance discourse. The paper tries to explain the inter linkages between land and climate governance, within the water-food-energy nexus, and the increasing and important role for science, technology and innovation in agriculture in order to become more resilient to current and future challenges in climate and land governance.

This publication is a collection of 2014 CSO land reform monitoring reports on the status of land tenure and access to land from seven Asian countries (Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Nepal, Pakistan, and the Philippines). The book also reflects the recent expansion of the monitoring initiative to a ridge-to-reef framework providing a more holistic approach in addressing ancestral lands, rural lands, and marine resource concerns.

The publication focuses on participatory processes and their management, and presents a broad range of concrete experience with different tools. It is assumed that the reader is already familiar with the use of tools like PRA/PLA/PME and is now interested in second generation issues related to project design, training and measurement of impact associated with the use of participatory processes. Each article reflects a specific experience. As such, it has its own validity.

This issue brief is an abridged version of the VGGT discussion paper, "Review of Selected Land Laws and the Governance of Tenure in the Philippines: Discussion Paper in the context of the Voluntary Guidelines on the Governance of Tenure (VGGT)" which  analyzes Philippine policies on land and resource tenure (as embodied in the 1987 Constitution and ten major laws on tenure)  

As part of a F&BKP knowledge agenda on land governance and food security, LANDac organisedthree country-specific learning trajectories on land governance and food security in Uganda, Ghana and Ethiopia. This reflection paper brings together the main findings and outcomes to provide policy recommendations for improved land governance and food security in Africa.
