Over the past two decades, perspectives on the role of the forest for society have evolved and broadened dramatically; the relatively narrow official view of the forest as primarily a source of wood and a form of protection for upland water resources has been seriously questioned and sometimes even violently opposed in favour of an approach that reflects a wider range of present and future opportunities and demands from forests and forest resources.

FAO has initiated a series of global and regional sector outlook studies to examine linkages between forests and societies and to indicate emerging opportunities and challenges. The Forestry Outlook Study for West and Central Asia (FOWECA) has considered these issues through an extended consultative process in 23 different national contexts in West and Central Asia.

La version française de l'Outil d'apprentissage sur les mesures d’atténuation appropriées au niveau national (MAAN) dans le secteur agriculture, foresterie et autres affectations des terres (AFAT) se compose d'une série de diapositives en cinq modules pour l'étude indépendante. L'outil examine les voies pour l'identification des MAAN (c’est-à-dire évaluations rapides ou approfondies) et la hiérarchisation des options différentes pour la réduction des émissions de gaz à effet de serre (GES).
