Saint Lucia and FAO have partnered since the country joined the organization in 1979. Assistance has been geared towards sustainable agricultural development and food and nutrition security, with a parallel focus on natural resource management. Ranging from national policy support to community-level projects, interventions seek to improve agricultural productivity and local food production as well as income-earning opportunities for rural communities. Other key features of cooperation are disaster risk management and adaptation to climate change.

The Bahamas became an FAO member state in 1975. Cooperation has focused on strategic development and increased competitiveness of the country’s agriculture and fisheries sector, with FAO interventions comprising policy and legislative support, technical development projects and rehabilitation and emergency assistance. As a flat and small island developing state (SIDS), the Bahamas is very vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, which makes resilience building an important element of cooperation today.

Rural-based economic activity can be just as effective for poverty reduction as that of urban sectors. Since the 1990s, rural transformation has lifted nearly as many people out of poverty as urban development. Many more will be able to climb out of poverty if greater priority is given to public investments in rural areas.

The partnership between FAO and Turkey has thrived since the establishment of the country office in 1982 and the Subregional

Office for Central Asia in 2007 in Ankara. Through the FAO-Turkey Partnership Programme and FAO-Turkey Forestry Programme,

cooperation continues to prosper. The country has benefited from wide-ranging assistance from FAO and it is also an active

resource partner, providing indispensable technical and financial support to FAO activities, particularly within the subregion.

Cooperation between Tajikistan and FAO has been ongoing since the country joined the Organization in 1995. FAO

assistance was initially provided in the form of short-term emergency interventions in response to a locust outbreak and

also to help the transition to stability after a period of civil war. More recently, cooperation has focused on rehabilitation

and development interventions to build a sustainable agriculture sector and food and nutrition security.

Jamaica joined FAO in 1963. In 1978, the Organization established a representation in Jamaica which today also covers

Since Zambia joined FAO in 1965, cooperation has focused on the provision of technical assistance across the country’s

agriculture sector, including rural development. Cooperation has been in line with the country’s successive national

frameworks, including most recently the 7th National Development Plan, aimed at achieving the Vision 2030 objective of

transforming Zambia into a middle-income country by 2030.
