Judging by the number of claims that have been made, the New South Wales Aboriginal Land Rights Act is a victim of its own success.

In the past year the number of undetermined land claims has increased to over 29,000. It has been calculated this "land bank" will take 90 years or more to determine.

JAKARTA (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - Indonesia's government is under pressure to boost protection for indigenous peoples' rights, after a state-led inquiry identified 40 cases in which they were violated, prompting calls for the president to set up a task force to deal with the problem.

Speakers at a token hunger strike yesterday demanded a separate land commission for indigenous people living in plain lands.


The hunger strike was organised by Bangladesh Adivasi Forum, Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) Citizens’ Committee and CHT Headman Network at the Central Shaheed Minar in the capital.
