Income and greenhouse gas (GHG) emission trade-offs on smallholder farms at two sites in northern Nigeria

December, 2019
Nigeria

This study analyses the trade-offs between welfare (measured by income) and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions using a farm-level optimisation model that incorporates the predominant cereal (sorghum), legumes (groundnut, soybeans), livestock (cattle, goats and sheep) and trees (locust bean, camel’s foot) representative of production systems at two contrasting sites in northern Nigeria.

An evaluation of emerging feed additives to reduce methane emissions from livestock

December, 2020
New Zealand

The inclusion of feed additives in livestock diets or supplements is a routine global nutritional management practice. Consequently, the existing commercial feed additive marketing and delivery pathways will be able to deliver rapid market penetration of feed additives specifically developed to reduce enteric methane emissions. So, the delivery path is clear, but are the methane mitigating additives available, effective, and are there any constraints or risks associated with their use?

Empowerment resources, decision-making and gender attitudes: which matter most to livestock keepers in the mixed and livestock-based systems in Ethiopia?

December, 2021
Ethiopia

Women's empowerment constitutes an important aspect of the development agenda. Although it is highly contextual in nature, empowerment literature so far has focussed on identifying factors associated with empowerment, neglecting the importance of understanding which empowerment resources and agency dimensions are more important for whom and under what contexts. This is important, because we cannot talk of empowerment for those who are not in a disempowered condition or who do not value it.

Accelerating Impacts of CGIAR Climate Research for Africa (AICCRA): Labor Management Procedure (LMP) for Senegal cluster activities

December, 2021
Senegal

This Labor Management Procedures (LMP) has been developed by the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) to guide mitigation and response to project risks relating to working conditions and occupational health and safety (OHS) of workers and community members during the implementation of the Accelerating Impact of CGIAR Climate Research for Africa (AICCRA) project activities in Senegal.

TH3.2: Youth transitions and livestock in Kenya

December, 2021
Kenya

Globally, youth transitions to adulthood are becoming more complex. The relative importance of key milestones that are used to describe the transition from youth to adulthood are culturally embedded and change across generations. So called ‘critical moments' may include completing education, moving from school to the labour force, leaving home, marriage, and parenthood. In the global south, sub–Saharan Africa in particular, agricultural and livestock assets are also culturally valued and often critical to supporting major achievements in transitions.

Scaling up pro-poor agrobiodiversity interventions as a development option

December, 2022
Global

Pro-poor interventions that use agrobiodiversity for development actions are widely considered relevant only at small scales. Agrobiodiversity interventions are often left out of national-level/large-scale development planning. Scaling-up modalities include adaptation, diffusion, replication, value addition, and temporal scaling up. We undertook a review of 119 interventions that use agrobiodiversity for both the crop and the livestock sector.

Agroecological transitions in value chains: Main findings, challenges, and opportunities for the agroecological transition of the value chains in the agroecological living landscapes

December, 2022
Venezuela

This report summarizes the main findings and insights obtained from the various agroecological value chain analyses conducted in the different Agroecological Living Landscapes (ALL) that take part of the CGIAR Agroecology Initiative (AE-I).
The document includes a synthesis of 10 value chains analyses in specific subregions from 6 countries, which represent a wide range of political, agroecological, socioeconomic and cultural conditions: a dairy value chain in Burkina Faso;

Political Economy of the Wheat Sector in Uzbekistan Seed Systems, Variety Adoption and Impacts

December, 2021
Global

Agriculture plays an important role in the economy of Uzbekistan contributing 16%
to GDP and 44% to employment. Uzbekistan has a land area of 44.8 million ha, of
which about 4.5 million ha is arable, and 4 million ha is irrigated. Main cultivated crops
are cotton, wheat, barley, rice, maize, potatoes, and horticultural crops (vegetables and
fruits). The population of Uzbekistan was estimated at 34 million in 2019 and continues
to grow at a rate of 1.67% per year (WB, 2019). Currently, an estimated 18 million
