Land is considered a vital resource for any nation. It serves as the platform for carrying out

social, cultural and economic activities. Access to land is an important means for promoting

growth and equity and achieving social justice in many countries. The process by which

decisions are made regarding access to and use of land, the manner in which those decisions are

implemented and the way that conflicting interests in land are reconciled are crucial in

determining whether the country has what it takes to derive the desired benefits from this

The Land Matrix is an independent land monitoring initiative that promotes transparency and accountability around large-scale land acquisitions (LSLAs) in low- and middle-income countries across the world. By capturing data on its website, the initiative aims to stimulate debate on the trends and impacts of LSLAs, facilitate wide participation in collecting and sharing data about these deals, and contribute to the growing movement towards open data.

Climate- and human-induced land degradation endangers the future survival of our planet. A new focus on achieving Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN) seeks to spark and grow transformative efforts to avoid, reduce and reverse land degradation through gender- and socially-equitable means.

The RGIL project is part of the Global Programme Responsible Land Policy (GPRLP) and is implemented in Ethiopia, Laos and Uganda. A 16 minute documentary film developed by ESAFF Uganda detailing how small-scale farming communities in northern Uganda are using LSLBI tools to raise the awareness;especially of women;to engage with local leaders;produce resource maps;including scoping;negotiating;monitoring and implementation. The training also used drama. The aim is to empower farmers who engage with investors.
