The distribution of cadmium in soil and cacao beans in Peru

December, 2022
Peru

Peru is the eighth largest producer of cacao beans globally, but high cadmium contents are constraining access to international markets which have set upper thresholds for permitted concentrations in chocolate and derivatives. Preliminary data have suggested that high cadmium concentrations in cacao beans are restricted to specific regions in the country, but to date no reliable maps exist of expected cadmium concentrations in soils and cacao beans.

Drivers of maize yield variability at household level in northern Ghana and Malawi

December, 2022

Maize is a staple food, but productivity has stagnated due to limited access to advanced farming methods and knowledge. To promote sustainable agriculture, understanding the factors affecting maize yield at the farm level is crucial. This study used panel data on maize yield and agronomic practices in Northern Ghana and Malawi from 2014 to 2020. Satellite-based environmental variables were extracted at household locations, and Random Forest modeling was used to identify factors influencing maize yield variability.

Approximating soil organic carbon stock in the Eastern Plains of Colombia

December, 2020
Colombia

In Colombia, the rise of agricultural and pastureland expansion continues to exert increasing pressure on the structure and ecological processes of savannahs in the Eastern Plains. However, the effect of land use change on soil properties is often unknown due to poor access to remote areas. Effective management and conservation of soils requires the development spatial approaches that measure and predict dynamic soil properties such as soil organic carbon (SOC).

Situational analysis of the Karamoja-Turkana/West Pokot-Easter Equatoria Cluster

December, 2021
Global

This study evaluates the context within the targeted areas in the Horn of Africa, and summarises common investments in these countries in relation to climate adaptation and climate security based on a review of Nationally Determined Contributions. The report also assesses key agreements in the Karamoja-Turkana/Pokot-Eastern Equatoria cluster, identifying the focus priorities of these agreements and suggested interventions with the purpose of informing stakeholders on regional priorities and investments with cross-border benefits.

Eight guide steps for setting up a Climate-Smart Village: A trainer's guide

December, 2019
Global

The training manual presents a step-by-step process of establishing a Climate-Smart Village (CSV), with each step being complemented with learning objectives, session guides, and educational support materials. Additional links were provided for each step to promote further learning for its users. Different forms of visuals such as photos, maps, and graphs make the publication easy to read and thus easy to understand. This is almost a one-stop-shop for implementers to acquire the information, capacity, and other prerequisites necessary for establishing a CSV.

Participatory climate risk mapping: Building local adaptation capacities. A case from Ivisan , Capiz , Philippines

December, 2019
Philippines

The report discussed how the local government unit in Ivisan municipality, Capiz, Philippines coped with, mitigated, and prepared for climate related risks in the livelihood and agri fisheries sector. The goal of the research was to produce Climate Related Risk Maps and Adaptation Plans in agriculture (Climate Smart MAP/CS MAP) for the 15 villages of Ivisan. The maps will assist in decision making and planning for risks, in normal and severe years, on a long term basis.

Vulnerability mapping of 100 priority tree species in Central Africa to guide conservation and restoration efforts

December, 2021
Global

Climate change and other anthropogenic threats are increasingly imperilling the diverse biomes of Central Africa, which are globally important for biodiversity, carbon storage and people's livelihoods. The objectives of this paper were to: (i) map the vulnerability of 100 socio-ecologically important priority tree species in Central Africa to climate change, fire, habitat conversion, overexploitation, overgrazing and (ii) propose a spatially explicit strategy to guide restoration and conservation actions.

Mapping the design and implementation of seed sector regulation: The case of Uganda

December, 2022
Uganda

An enabling environment with clear, inclusive, and transparent seed laws, policies, regulations, and guidelines is the foundation for an efficient and effective seed sector. If well designed and implemented, the legal and regulatory framework can facilitate market diversification, supervision and quality control of seed and other forms of planting material, promotion of private sector participation, farmer access to improved seed varieties, reduced barriers for the movement of seeds across borders, and food security.

The impact of user characteristics of smallholder farmers on user experiences with collaborative map applications

December, 2021
Global

In the future, farmers will have increasing opportunities to use collaborative smartphone applications for agricultural management. Geospatial information in combination with agricultural-relevant information is a great source of knowledge for farmers. Including maps in collaborative mobile agriculture applications benefits communication processes related to agricultural-relevant questions. Ensuring a positive user experience with map interfaces depends on their design.

Earth Observations for Humanitarian Applications

05 June 2024 - 19 June 2024

NASA’s Applied Remote Sensing Training Program (ARSET) has opened a new open, online webinar series: Earth Observations for Humanitarian Applications. Refugees, internally displaced people (IDPs), and other displaced populations are made more vulnerable to climate change impacts due to their socio-political marginalization. This three-part, intermediate training presents concrete strategies for mapping localized climate conditions with risks faced by refugee and IDP communities around the world.

The training will focus on flood risk assessments and specific challenges for assessing flood risk in refugee and IDP camps; gauging long-term heat stress in refugee camps and the challenges with decision making surrounding heat risk; and monitoring drought effects on agricultural landscapes in refugee settings using Earth observations (EO) to explore the correlations between anomalies in crop productivity and weather-based factors

Assessing the Impacts of Fires on Watershed Health

05 July 2023 - 12 July 2023

NASA’s Applied Remote Sensing Training Program (ARSET) has opened a new open, online webinar series: Assessing the Impacts of Fires on Watershed Health. This advanced-level, three-part training will focus on using remote sensing observations for monitoring post-fire impacts on watershed health. Specifically, this training will highlight uses of NASA Earth observations (EO) for pre-fire land cover mapping, watershed delineation and stream mapping, post-fire burn severity mapping, and pre- and post-fire riverine and freshwater water quality.

Fundamentals of Machine Learning for Earth Science

19 April 2023 - 03 May 2023

NASA’s Applied Remote Sensing Training Program (ARSET) has opened a new online introductory webinar series: Fundamentals of Machine Learning for Earth Science. This three-part training, presented in English and Spanish, is open to the public and will provide attendees an overview of machine learning in regards to Earth Science, and how to apply these algorithms and techniques to remote sensing data in a meaningful way. Attendees will also be provided with end-to-end case study examples for generating a simple random forest model for land cover classification from optical remote sensing. We will also present additional case studies to apply the presented workflows using additional NASA data.
