IP women challenge the intersection of gender and land rights inequalities

This case study highlights the vulnerability of women in Fiaferana, who are disadvantaged, first, by their gender and indigenous heritage, and second, by their lack of tenure security in the midst of climate change. However, the women of Fiaferana have met these overlapping  challenges head-on through innovative and empowering strategies, including sustainable land use management.

Gender Inequality and Climate Change Adaptation Strategies for Food Security in Tanzania

This paper assessed gender inequality in household resources, particularly land ownership, division of labour and decision making as regards climate change adaptation strategies for household food security. The results show that gender inequality exists among the pastoralists in terms of household division of labour, ownership of resources and decision-making such that women do not control important productive resources such as land and livestock which make them more vulnerable to the impacts of climate change and less able to adapt to it.

This brief consolidates the key findings from a larger Mekong Region Land Governance (MRLG) regional report Towards gender-equitable land policy and law-making in the Mekong Region. The report used consultation processes over the 2024 Land Law as a case study, and involved interviews, participatory consultation pilots, observations of national consultation workshops, and an extensive literature review.
