Land rights matter: Impact of the project for Responsible Land Policy (ProPFR) in the Centre region of Cameroon

The project "Responsible Land Policy" (ProPFR) in Cameroon is being implemented since January 2023 and contributes to strengthening land use rights in the Centre Region of Cameroon (primarily in the municipalities of Nanga-Eboko and Yoko), safeguarding the livelihoods of the rural population and simultaneously promoting the protection and restoration of forest-rich landscapes. This article provides an overview of the progress of the project and its impact.

Guidance for Agricultural Investments towards enhanced responsibility

A project of the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development, co-funded by the EU and implemented through the Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH has been striving to ensure that investments in land are productive, contribute to sustainable land management, and respect the land access rights and needs of the local population, vulnerable groups and women. After continuous engagement in respective activities, the Responsible Governance of Investments in Land (RGIL) project will phase out by the end of 2023 and is handed over to the government of Ethiopia.

The Human Right to Land: Do we need Human Rights based Land Governance and what could it deliver?

The session co-organised by TMG research and the Danish Institute of Human Rights looked at the interlinkages between responsible land governance and human rights. Participants discussed critical questions such as: can a more explicit embedding of land rights work in Human Rights correct overly simplistic, technical framings? Can it reaffirm the legally binding human rights foundation of voluntary responsible land governance (i.e. the VGGT)?

Madagascar: strong concerns around the new land law

At its last meeting on 10 November, the Committee's experts exchanged views on recent legislative developments in Madagascar and expressed their concerns regarding the likely adoption of Law 2021-06. This calls into question the recognition of customary land rights and leads to a reversal of the decentralized land management process that had been under way since 2005.

Support to Lao People's Democratic Republic in developing or revising sub-legislations under 2019 Land Law

FAO is providing support to the Government of Lao People's Democratic Republic in the crafting of relevant sub-legislations under the 2019 Land Law. This process is led by the Department of Land of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment. FAO's support will ensure the mainstreaming of the principles and internationally recognized good practices of the VGGT, as well as building on the support provided and the network of partners at the time of drafting the land law.
