Climate change and desertification

Policy Papers & Briefs
December, 2010
Global

The message in this short, yet stark sentence highlights a phenomenon that farmers, particularly in marginalized dryland areas, have been experiencing for years – the threat of desertification and climate change to their lives. Carbon sequestration, however, serves a dual purpose to remedy this threat. Firstly, global warming can be mitigated significantly by removing atmospheric carbon dioxide and sequestering it in soil. Secondly, increased carbon in the soil has great value as a food-producing asset.

Changement climatique et désertification

Global

Policy-making in the face of climate change, water conflicts and human security

December, 2010

The second policy brief from the EU funded Climate Change, Hydro?conflicts and Human Security (CLICO) project presents insights on emerging policies at the interface of climate change, water and human security at national and international level. Ten case studies were conducted in variouscountries in the he Mediterranean, the Middle East and the Saheland at UN and EU level. These investigate whether the link between climate change and human security/conflict is being addressed through targeted policies. The studies show that so far there are few specific policies addressing this interface.

Kailash sacred landscape conservation initiative – Feasibility assessment report

December, 2010

The Kailash Sacred Landscape (KSL) spreads across a vast region that includes remote portions of the Tibet Autonomous Region of China (TAR China) and contiguous areas of Nepal and India. This area is historically, ecologically, and culturally interconnected; it is the source of four of Asia’s most important rivers, and at the heart of this landscape is the sacred Mount Kailash, revered by millions of people in Asia and throughout the world.

REDD+ in Asia-Pacific: Are Capacity Building Services Meeting Countries' Needs?

December, 2010
Indonesia
Vietnam
Southern Asia
Eastern Asia
Oceania

This report examines strengths, weaknesses and gaps in the capacity building services available for Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+) readiness in Asia-Pacific countries. It begins with an overview of capacity building service providers and then assesses the leading providers currently operating. The report concludes by offering recommendations for policy makers, development partners and service providers.

The new competition for land: Food, energy, and climate change

December, 2010
United States of America
Brazil
Europe

This paper discusses the competition for land resources and the issue of land-use change due to the rising demand for food and energy, specifically for the transport sector. The linkages between land, food, and energy become particularly complex within the context of climate change. This is not only because agriculture contributes to greenhouse gas emissions, but also because climate change itself can alter the productivity and availability of land.

Support for Payment for Ecosystem Services in the Heart of Borneo

December, 2010
Indonesia
Eastern Asia
Oceania
Southern Asia

This briefing note has been produced Forests and Climate Change Programme (FORCLIME), which is bilateral initiative implemented jointly by Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) and the Indonesian Ministry of Forestry. It outlines the concept of Payment for Ecosystem Services (PES) and makes the case for the use of PES on Borneo island.

World Resources Report Case Study. Maintenance of Hydropower Potential in Rwanda Through Ecosystem Restoration

December, 2010
Rwanda
Sub-Saharan Africa

Although it is not possible to state with confidence how climate change may alter precipitation patterns in Rwanda, it is clear that this process will affect the management and generation capacity of its hydroelectric sector in the future. The Government of Rwanda sought to restore the degraded Rugezi-Bulera- Ruhondo watershed by halting on-going drainage activities in the Rugezi Wetlands and banning agricultural and pastoral activities within and along its shores, as well as along the shores of Lakes Bulera and Ruhondo.

Climate Change Adaptation for Smallholder Farmers in Southeast Asia

December, 2010
Indonesia
Vietnam
Southern Asia
Eastern Asia
Oceania

Climate change is set to have a significant impact on climate-sensitive sectors of national economies, such as agriculture. This report, published by the World Agroforestry Centre, discusses the challenges that climate change brings to smallholder farmers in Southeast Asia, and outlines adaptive measures that can be taken. It begins with a brief general discussion of climate change and moves on to describe the likely impacts for farmers. The following section highlights adaptive strategies available to small-scale farmers in the region.
