Regional strategy for implementing the code of practice for forest harvesting in Asia-Pacific

This document provides suggestions for an overall strategic framework to achieve implementation of the Code of Practice for Forest Harvesting in Asia-Pacific. Once implemented the Code will optimise the benefits offered by the region's natural production forests and contribute to their sustainable management for the continuing benefit of the community as a whole. The goals and objectives of this Regional Strategy are expressed as eight strategies for implementation. (1) Encourage appropriate public and political support for implementation of the Code.

However, knowledge and expertise regarding secondary forests is still limited, and they are inadequately addressed in forest policy, planning and research.

This thirty-page report is the third out of three reports written on forest resources in Madagascar. It is aimed at the collection, analysis of data related to the forest plantations sector in Madagascar. Different from the other two reports, it deals with issues related to village plantations and its uses by local families. The report is composed of six main topics dealing with the methodologies used, the surface of the plantations, total volume of these, the commercial aspects, the duration of rotation and the dynamics of reforestation and exploitation.

The first part of the report analyses the current uses and importance of forest products in the country followed by a special review on wood production and its uses. The later part looks into the collection, analysis and dissemination process and evaluates the methodologies used during the process. An analysis of the present state of forest plantations and of current trends in plantation forestry both on a global basis and region-by-region. Economic and policy considerations in the development of plantation forestry are discussed. The outlook for plantation forestry is then presented in the form of alternative scenarios according to future growth in plantation area.
