Wheat is a global staple crop, which contributes 20% of the total dietary proteins and calories. Despite its importance, wheat production and productivity are affected by various biotic and abiotic stresses. Septoria leaf blotch is one of the biotic stresses that decreases production and grain quality. A field survey was conducted in twenty-four districts of Northwestern Ethiopia to figure out its distribution, incidence, severity, and association with agronomic practices and agroecological factors.

On September 18, 2023, the One CGIAR initiative on Livestock and Climate, in collaboration with the Direction General des Forets (DGF) and the International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA), hosted a webinar addressing the challenges and opportunities in leveraging native species for the restoration of degraded silvopastoral systems in Tunisia. The webinar convened 34 participants from diverse national research and development institutions, fostering a rich exchange of perspectives.

Nutritional potential of adzuki bean germplasm and mining nutri-dense accessions through multivariate analysis

The adzuki bean (Vigna angularis), known for its rich nutritional composition, holds significant promise in addressing food and nutritional security, particularly for low socioeconomic classes and the predominantly vegetarian and vegan populations worldwide. In this study, we assessed a total of 100 diverse adzuki bean accessions, analyzing essential nutritional compounds using AOAC's official analysis procedures and other widely accepted standard techniques. Our analysis of variance revealed significant genotype variations for all the traits studied.

The frequency of El Niño occurrences in southern Africa surpasses the norm, resulting in erratic weather patterns that significantly impact food security, particularly in Zimbabwe. The effects of these weather patterns posit that El Niño occurrences have contributed to the diminished maize yields. The objective is to give guidelines to policymakers, researchers, and agricultural stakeholders for taking proactive actions to address the immediate and lasting impacts of El Niño and enhance the resilience of the agricultural industry.

In Ethiopia, the production of livestock has been mainly constrained by low quality feed supply and seasonal fluctuations. The usage of good quality and drought-tolerant forage legumes like white lupin and tree lucerne are recommended to overcome feed constraints. Those legumes fix atmospheric nitrogen when being in symbiosis with rhizobia and thereby reduce the need for synthetic fertilizers. However, they show variations in terms of N2-fixation, calling for screening the best native symbionts.

Opportunities to close wheat yield gaps in Nepal’s Terai: Insights from field surveys, on-farm experiments, and simulation modeling

CONTEXT
Wheat (Triticum aestivum) is among the most important staple food crops in the lowland Terai region of Nepal. However, national production has not matched the increasing demand. From a South Asian regional perspective, average productivity is low with high spatial and temporal variability.
OBJECTIVES
This study determines entry points for closing yield gaps using multiple diagnostic approaches, i.e., field surveys, on-farm experiments, and simulation models across different wheat production environments in the Terai region of Nepal.

Common beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) are an important source of food and protein in Honduras and the region. Smallholders produce most of the beans, and they face many biotic and abiotic challenges. Roughly 10-15% of bean producers in Honduras belong to a farmer association. These associations provide goods and services (technical assistance, inputs, credit, market information) to farmers, expecting members to sell high-quality beans back.
