Powering beans in Burundi. Seven years of unleashing inclusive bean value chains: 2015-2021

Over the past seven years (2015-2021), the Pan-Africa Bean Research Alliance (PABRA) and the Institut des Sciences Agronomiques du Burundi (ISABU), supported by the Swiss Agency for Cooperation and Development (SDC) and Global Affairs Canda (GAC), have empowered women to become entrepreneurs in Burundi's bean seed industry. Today, half of Burundi's decentralized bean seed producers are women, resulting in increased food and nutrition security, more bean-based products, and profitable markets for both men and women. Overall, bean production experienced a fivefold increase.

Effective demand for climate-smart adaptation: a case of solar technologies for cocoa irrigation in Ghana

Given the generally low adoption of early climate change response technologies among tree crop producers in sub-Saharan Africa, stakeholders interested in the commercialization or scaling of such technologies will require empirical evidence of their market prospects. Using a double-bounded contingent valuation approach, the study evaluated the willingness and ability of 523 Ghanaian producers to invest in solar-powered irrigation pumps (SPIPs) for cocoa irrigation. The sample was split into three segments based on farm size: resource-poor, resource-limited, and resource-rich.

The Pan-Africa Bean Research Alliance (PABRA) through the Improving Bean Productivity and Markets in Africa (IBPMA) Project funded by the Global Affairs Canada engaged on the project to reduce poverty amongst smallholder bean farmers, especially women, by reducing food insecurity, increasing incomes, and strengthening climate-smart agriculture (CSA). This mid-term evaluation report has brought up some key findings about the progress the project made over the four-year implementation period.

Digital innovation in citizen science to enhance water quality monitoring in developing countries

Freshwater systems are disproportionately adversely affected by the ongoing, global environmental crisis. The effective and efficient water resource conservation and management necessary to mitigate the crisis requires monitoring data, especially on water quality. This is recognized by Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6, particularly indicator 6.3.2., which requires all UN member states to measure and report the ‘proportion of water bodies with good ambient water quality’.

Do needs motivate the exchange of data in transboundary waters? Insights from Africa’s shared basins

Despite widespread recognition of the importance of data exchange in transboundary waters’ management, there is growing evidence that data exchange is falling short in practice. A possible explanation may be that data exchange occurs where and when it is needed. Needs for data exchange in shared waters, nonetheless, have not been systematically assessed. This paper evaluates data exchange needs in a set of transboundary basins and compares such needs with evidenced levels of data exchange.

The MDII is guided by eight principles, including accessibility, transparency, methodological rigor, adaptability, intersectionality, simplicity, flexibility, and clarity.

Cloud-based crop type mapping for Nandi County, Kenya

Crop type mapping is essential to agriculture applications, including yield estimates, crop planting acreage statistics, agricultural market predictions, and land use change analysis that support relevant decision-making. Since 2008, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) has produced the annual Cropland Data Layer (CDL) with 108 crop types and 26 other land-use types for the CONUS Climate Console at 30 meters spatial resolution.

Scoping Study Report: Potential Existing Value Chains in the North-West Region of Tunisia

The objective of this report is to select the main value chains with potential to integrate the agroecological principles in the Northwest of Tunisia. A descriptive analysis on the two governorates chosen was first made, then 4 focus group discussions were organized with local farmers associations. The VC assessment according to agroecological principles conducted with the main actors places the olive oil VC as the major value chain with agroecological character.

Because of the predicted challenges associated with environmental factors such as climate change, soil degradation and rainfall variability, which negatively impact the viability of smallholder agriculture, the transition toward sustainable and resilient agricultural and food systems is paramount. Nature-based solutions can play a major role in this transition.

Known for their hilly terrain, terraced rice fields and diverse ethnic groups, these provinces have high potential for increased food production. But sustainability, nutrition, health, conservation of nature and traditional knowledge are sometimes overlooked. The Initiative aims to help address these gaps in the areas’ development.
